FAU 2014 ABSN applicants

U.S.A. Florida

Published

I haven't seen a thread directed at applicants for this application cycle, so I figured I'd start one! Just one month left until applications open. Who's ready? :) I figure we can meet here to discuss any questions or issues with applications, provide support and feedback to fellow applicants, as well as introduce ourselves as potential future classmates! Communication is, after all, critical for all nurses.

I actually have a question to start us off. The pre-requisites listed for the program mention "College Algebra or equivalent" for science GPA calculations. In my case, I took a few more advanced mathematics courses for my degree, and I have a better grade in Calculus than I do in College Algebra. I can only chalk it up to it being my first semester in college. Does anyone know if they will count my Calc grade instead? It means the difference between a 3.8 and 3.9 for my science GPA.

That's how I feel as well and I feel fau is where I am "destined" to be. . but at the same time realistically if I don't get accepted then . . . .

If FAU is the program you believe is for you, then it will happen. If not this year, then next year. This is not the be all end all. At this point, you still have a chance, so don't lose hope yet. You made it this far, you should be proud of yourself!

Best thing you can do for yourself right now is keep busy so you don't dwell on it too much.

Haha yeah true. . .

Hi guys and congratulations for those who made it so far and sorry for those who haven't and were as qualified as most of us. The waiting time is very difficult to say the least. In this vein, I have received today a message from the College of Nursing informing me about the programs available (the ABSN and the traditional) and I freak out a little....is this the rejection email? Has anyone else received the same email?

Thanks for your responses...

Hmm interesting I didn't receive such an email . . . Yet?

I sincerely doubt this is a rejection email. If you get a denial letter, it will explicitly tell you that they are not extending an invitation to you for the program. It sounds like this may just be an email for those who may have previously requested information about the program, etc. It sounds like an automated email (especially given it was sent on a Saturday).

Long story short, unless it says (in so many words) "thanks, but no thanks", you aren't receiving a denial letter.

Thanks Quendi for the reassurance. I really appreciate your optimism.

Does anyone have recommendations for where to take the BLS class?

So I know this is jumping the gun a little but I am panicking a little ... Does anyone know for certain the ABSN orientation date? I am out of the country on April 5th ... scheduled a vacation based on the April 11th date. Because this was my second time around I just went straight to the application page to check for dates/changes and never even looked at overview until you all mentioned the discrepancy here... eeek!

Good question I was wondering that as well as well as place to get the shots done, people said you can get them done at urgent care but prices are different at different locations. .guess you just have to call around? . . As far as the bls I know Broward college has an 8 hours bls course but space is extremely limited and it cost like $93 don't quote me on that but If you go onto the American Heart association Web site you can look up different clinical location where you can do your practucum after completing the online portion of the certification.

Yeah I think orientation is going to be on April 5th for both ABSN and traditional program I think they combined it to save time.

I spoke with Dr. D about the BLS course. She said as long as it is AHA certified, and NOT the heart saver course (I took the one for healthcare professionals), it should be fine. I took mine in Lake Worth since it was close to me. There are several locations you can go to though. Like Duma said, check the AHA website.

As for orientation, I would call ASAP to confirm the date. As far as I know, if you miss orientation, you forfeit your seat. Better to know now and make adjustments as needed.
