FAU 2014 ABSN applicants

U.S.A. Florida

Published

I haven't seen a thread directed at applicants for this application cycle, so I figured I'd start one! Just one month left until applications open. Who's ready? :) I figure we can meet here to discuss any questions or issues with applications, provide support and feedback to fellow applicants, as well as introduce ourselves as potential future classmates! Communication is, after all, critical for all nurses.

I actually have a question to start us off. The pre-requisites listed for the program mention "College Algebra or equivalent" for science GPA calculations. In my case, I took a few more advanced mathematics courses for my degree, and I have a better grade in Calculus than I do in College Algebra. I can only chalk it up to it being my first semester in college. Does anyone know if they will count my Calc grade instead? It means the difference between a 3.8 and 3.9 for my science GPA.

I am a bit confused on this as well... I took all of my prerequisites not part of my original bachelor's at florida community colleges (of course they are all now called state colleges to confuse the issue even more)... maybe it's because all of my upper level education took place out of state, but I believed all state colleges and universities would belong to the state university system ... Also the link implies a preference for SUS... not a requirement... hmmm? Maybe someone who has been fully educated here in Florida understands and can advise?

I know that IRSC will not allow you to retake a course if you received a "C" or better. I wanted to retake a course in which I got a "B" but the college would not allow me to do so. The advisor told me that I would have to retake it at the university level.

Ahhhhhh!!!! Ok so it's that state colleges won't let you retake a B and state universities will.... it all makes sense now! Thanks SBabs!!!

The anticipation!! ?

That really doesn't say that and that is under traditional.

I just don't know why they have to torture us like this lol why would they send some out last night and leave the rest of us hanging? I'm really hoping they still have acceptance emails for traditional :-/

I am sorry for causing confusion.

Regarding repeat courses

What I meant is that in the state college system, you cannot repeat a course if you have a passing grade. So if you have a grade of "C" in A&P, you cannot repeat the course to try for a higher grade. However in the University system, you can repeat courses even if you have passing grades. You won't read that anywhere on FAU materials. It will only hit you if you try to register at the state colleges. I am just trying to save you that stress because it so part of my knowledge set.

Regarding the post asking for clarification as to why any individual did not get admitted

I can't predict what is planned for this year. In years past I have met with individuals. But, other schools do not do that. Others who are on this post would admit that I have spent hours with applicants individually directing and advising them. Technically, it is not a requirement and is time consuming. So, most schools will not meet with applicants at all.

Truthfully, for many, there is no way to say why they did not make the cut. It truly is just the numbers cut in the rankings. If we could take in more students, they would be in like flinn. So, there is nothing wrong with the applicant or the application. Others who need to correct something, know that they should have corrected that "C" to begin with.

Or, some of the files I reviewed before Christmas did not have all of the science courses completed or in progress, yet they applied. People with seriously low GPAs applied. Those applicants probably should not be nurses to begin with since they do not pay attention to important details. But, they still want advising time.

Last year that was 700 applicants. So, please understand that we have gone above and beyond to serve applicants. Your anger is misplaced. No other school would provide the support that we have provided for applicants. With new leadership. I just don't know what will be provided. Please don't assume that what was done is your right.

OK, since letters are arriving, I probably will not be checking back this year. See you during the next application cycle. Best wishes to all!

Dr. D.

Gforge, i was thinking the same thing, I fear that maybe they sent all the acceptance letters for the traditional track last night, an the denial letters will be sent later, I really hope that's not the case. And what ever the descion is I wanna know now

Thanks again for the guidance Dr. D. For those who are frustrated I will attest to the fact that FAU was great in guiding me after my denial last year. In fact Dr. D personally emailed and met with me. I have met with administrators at several other schools... despite some minor administrative ooopsies (like the duplicate fau acceptances sent) and potential limits on counseling opportunities (there are after all so many of us and so few members of the CON admissions team) there really is no other school that has been as compassionate and engaged with applicants ... hence I declined other admissions last year to hold out for another try at FAU and am very anxious right now! Best of luck all!

Do anyone knows if Fau offers alternates ?

I completely agree, MrsLucky. That's one of the reasons why I re-applied again this year. Dr. D is so compassionate with us, even after we got denied, she still sent communicated with us and helped us out as much as possible when she really didn't have to at all. But that's how amazing the administrators are at FAU. I want to be a part of this program so bad... I'm really praying we all make it together! There's still hope guys!! I think we are all just freaking ourselves out because we want this so bad

They just sent me a happy valentines day email lmao ...I swear these emails are going to give me a cardiac arrest lmao ... Omg

Thank you again Dr. D! Your posts are so valuable in the information they provide! And thanks to previous applicants for posting your insight and thoughts as well. The caring piece of the program is just so valuable and will be such an excellent component as we all journey on our career paths to RN! Side note - I just got the Happy Valentine's Day from FAU and all I saw was an email coming from FAU thinking it was THE email. I think my heart definitely skipped a beat!!
