:confused:how far is tooooo far for school? I would like to commute to a good lpn school in poughkeepsie ny from connecticut, its only 9000 in tuition and good grad n nclex rates. (opposed 35000 tution in connecticut). but its a whopping 91 miles !!! is it a good plan or not???

lol thats a good idea... im still a lilttle nervous!!!

I had to commute to LPN school 60-70 minutes each way for about 10 months. To me, it was just 10 months, not forever, so it was doable. It was well worth it and I would do it again.

You can record yourself reading your notes and/or chapters and listen to them in the car during your commute. A good way to get the info into your head another way.

I definitely agree with Wifeys. Consider that you will probably need to leave your house by 6.00am each day, because of traffic, and you'll be getting home well after 5.00pm. Each day will be nearly 12 hours long, before studying!!

That said, since the program is 9 months it might be possible to pull it off before getting too burned out. I'd say, look really hard for a school closer to you, that is affordable. (Maybe somewhere in MA or RI, if they are a bit closer). If not, it might be worth it to bust your butt for those months, since CT LPN programs are so completely ridiculously priced!!

Don't forget to add in commute time for clinical sites. I don't know the specifics for other schools but when I started my LPN course here in CT, I was told it was possible that the clinical sites we might have to go to could be up to a FIFTY mile radius from school.

Lets say the school you are thinking about has a similar policy on clinical sites, 91 miles from home for you and possible another 50 miles on top of that. 141 miles ONE way. And factor in weather, it could be a blizzard here in CT and fine 91 miles away, school won't be cancelled so you have to brave the weather and roads to get there..

Gas, wear and tear on your vehicle, lost time to study d/t commuting are also other things to consider

Well, the answer to your question all depends on how badly you want it. My commute was 95 miles one way (195 miles round trip) when I attended an LPN/LVN program 5 years ago, and this commute was 5 days per week. It can be done with careful planning and good time management.

im taking weather in consideration because today in connecticut we supposed to get 12 inches of snow -thats very dangerous to drive through... i lived in california 91 miles would be okay with weather!!!!!
