I have been a medsurg/telematary nurse for 3 yrs now. I have dedcided to go back to school to get my masters degree. I am interested in both family nurse practioner degree and nursing informatics degree. Which one do you think is more practical to start now? Can the gurus direct me on my course of study? Thanks everyone.

Nursing Informatics is a hot hot hot upcoming field! My wife has just started on her masters. She is a RN, BSN working in the information systems dept at a major Hospital in St. Louis. M-F 7-3 no weekends, no call....
My sister is an APN. She talked my wife out of going down that path. Scut work... always on call for the MD's. No life. Money is not much better. My RN wife out earns my sister, who practices in New York, and works less hours.
Your experiance might be different.

With so many primary care physicians quitting or cutting back and fewer medical students choosing that speciality (see recent survey), there is going to be even more of a demand for FNPs. More demand = higher salaries.

Do you have any gut feeling about whether you want to stay hands on/treating patients vs. not? That helped me make my decision...in an NP program now.

This is so conflicting with what I see and hear. I hear NPs themselves say their salary is not much better than an RN's, and they work harder for less pay. Then I hear (and know of) NPs working banker's hours and making 100K a year.
100K is a lot more than any RN I know.
So, which is it?

We had this talk this summer while my sister was visiting us in St. Louis. She was stunned when she found out how much my wife makes. My wife is an OR information systems RN BSN with 20 years of experience. We moved here from New York 11 years ago. My wife doubled her salary. So I guess it depends on where you live. My sister, in Rochester NY, makes less than 80K works weekends, nights and supervises other FNP's. She must work if the other FNP's cancel. She has been a FNP for about 10 years and an RN for 10 years before that.
I am know some APN's make much more than a FNP. It is this way with physicians, a specialist will make more than a generalist.
I know a nurse anthesis that makes over 140k. It is a very hard program. You have a lot at risk in this job but the pay is great. I think it would qualify as a Bankers job.
