Falsely Accused Of Patient Neglect

Suspended Falsely Accused

3 weeks ago I had helped a pt who was high fall risk who needed to use the bathroom and I used my nursing judgment and suggested she use a bedpan instead of walking to the bathroom because she was also complaining that she can't move her knee. A CNA and I placed pt on bedpan and later took her off and no complaints whatsoever. Son was in the room at the time. Next day I go to work am told I can't work because pt son complained that I was careless with his mom, forced her to use a bedpan and that I "grabbed" her hand when rolling her over on one side to place a bed pan. There's no other way to roll her over other than hold her hand. I asked her to give me her hand which she did and I did not grab her like am being accused of. Then the manager said that the pt son recorded me which I thought was weird. I asked if I can see the recording to see what I did wrong they refused. Am really stressing over this and I need advice. I have never done and procedural thing without asking pt permission and I wasn't forceful at all in any way shape or form. I have not seen the CNA I worked with that night since I have been suspended for 3 weeks. She was also agency I haven't seen her before that night. Need advice.

Why ask the question if the answer is already known?

I'm wondering why the son even stayed in the room while his mother was put on a bedpan.

Exactly this! When I worked in a facility, I always asked visitors to step out while using bedpan or BSC, for patient privacy. Sometimes to go to BR, depending on situation. Something odd about this son, who's never met you, wanting to get video of your care

ETA: just read that she was just admitted, so perhaps nerves was why son did video. Every long term and rehab facility that I've worked in, in last 15 or so years, have had specific policies in their admission packet that families must sign and adhere to (mostly because there may be other roommates that may be compromised in recording).

I wonder if they fired the Agency CNA?

Yes,  telling him about the visiting hours ending was a trigger. Him recording you sounds like this is one of those families that are just itching for a lawsuit so they try to find ANYTHING to complain about even if it’s unjustified. That’s why he had the recording on the ready. Jerk face!

I’m sorry this happened to you.

I went and asked around and found out the CNA still works and she was not reprimanded in any way. We both placed patient on bedpan where I helped turn the patient on one side and she placed the bedpan under patient. And yes, I believe son may have gotten upset when I told him visiting hours end shortly. He did not say anything to me at the moment and I did not see him record me either. I was told that there’s a recording 3 weeks after I was suspended.

Sounds like the son was determined to 'catch' someone doing something about which he could create a fuss (lawsuit?), right from the get-go. Sorry you were the one he chose. If he had the camera out and ready, sounds suspicious to me. And I don't understand why can't you see the video.

Yeah.

At Wrongway Regional Medical Center, when I was written up for propping the NS door open with a trash can- ruled a patient safety measure infraction- I was shown a dozen full color photographs of the crime. HR/Administration also showed me a video of a confused patient wandering into the NS, whom which I had to escort out.

I was told that I had the right to see the evidence of my heinous crime.

Maybe because there’s NO VODEO at all and it’s all malicious claims????

It’s just so weird that the CNA is okay and you aren’t. This seems so fishy

If it smells like a fish, and swims like a fish, it's probably a fish.

There are those out there who will, with great malice, create drama and bring others down in order to divert feeling their primal pain.

They're out there and we need to keep our trash cans covered, metaphorically speaking, to prevent them from spilling our trash. Living well is always the best revenge, and we must work and try and not take these things to heart. In my 40+ years in the field, working in over a dozen facilities, there are always those types around.

I could tell you stories.

I hope you found another position.  Being a nurse does not mean that you are

to be disrespected.  Respect yourself and leave.  I would file a complaint.
