Falls

Published

I worked at a retirement home for 18 years. I was since terminated. One of the reasons is that I had two falls happen at the same time and apparently didn’t handle it up to standards. I quickly assessed one woman and moved her and got her up. I then brought her to her room for further assessment by which I saw a cut on her head. I then sent her out to the hospital. I didn’t get a chance to take her BP or do a neuro assessment. I moved her and got her up without doing them first. Would you say that was negligent? I sent her to the hospital where they could do all the tests?

Ok, one more...

"They created the stress for me, took my leaves, then they fired me! Welcome to nursing life! "

Sheesh, sad how this was handled. You were thrown under the bus, I guess their money is more important than your 18 years of experience.

Hopefully you can take some time to heal, and get back into a better job site, best to find a place where managements are not blood hungry pitbulls.

This is not now nursing "life" should be. This needs to change. I care about patients, but I do care about those that work in health care too. Their jobs should not make them sick so they become patients too, that is highly dysfunctional.

Meanwhile, to defend yourself financially, when you earn money, sock away as much as you can, so you can take one stressor (financial) off your plate. It is always good to have "walk away money" before too much damage has been done.

They hired personal support workers to replace me on night shift. So yes I would say they got rid of me so they could pay the psws less $$. And to the message before the last one, you don’t have to agree with me but get all the facts before you pass judgement. Yes it is all about the $ there. They should have re education opportunities when things are not done up to par. No I don’t need retraining for neuro vitals but maybe some training on how to cope with two falls at the same time and being the only nurse available!

Yes thrown under the bus is def how I see it! Yes $ is all they care about! My co worker keeps saying how they have forgotten who has brought them to success! They were open only a few years before I started! Who got them to where they are at 18 years later?! Staff who have been there for a long time through thick and thin! One retired nurse got a retirement party! This is what I got! They favoured her and the rest of us are chopped liver!

Maybe this is how they divide and conquer, to create discord between staff. Something for nurses to think about and be aware of.

It is good you are expressing how you feel. I will stand by your side.

Remember, how they treated you does not define you. It is more a reflection of who they are as a management.

And I guess this is the point I was trying to make in blaming management. No of course I don’t blame management for my errors but I do blame them for discord between staff and poisoned work environment. Divide and conquer is def their style! Guess my original post has derailed onto what it should have been in the first place. I do believe that we should be accountable for our own errors or omissions. However, but I def agree that this whole thing is a reflection of who they are. And I guess if they didn’t bring down my confidence so much I would be strong and move on. But that isn’t where I am at this time.

And like the one person said here is that I did do a neuro assessment but it wasn’t done according to the form. Yes BP and pupil size etc is important. But so is their orientation and any other signs. Like one nurse said to me not all assessments are done by equipment. And no not everyone has to agree with me but it is nice to get some of the responses that give support and understanding. Which I have gotten quite a bit here! Thank you all for that!

Do you have support in the meantime? How will you pay your bills etc?, if you don't mind me asking.

I am getting Employment Insurance for the time being but it’s not a lot so am living off credit. It’s also hard to find a new job when you are terminated. Like what do you say to the new employer? And if you don’t say anything they will ask if they can speak to the previous employer. Or they just find out some other way. Guess I could go work for Walmart or McDonald’s and nothing wrong with that.

Do you know someone that will understand your situation and be able to help you get something else? On the other hand you may be happier working in a non-medical setting. Can you start a business? Hang in there and try not to get depressed. Play the lotto, you never know.

Well May 3 is pretty much the day I find out whether or not I will be reinstated. If I don’t go back well I guess I need to figure something else out. And too late for that I am already depressed!

I am hoping the union is strong and will stand up to this kind of nonsence.

I am thinking, since there is nothing to loose, be honest with the next potential employer, state the situation as it was when you encountered this specific situation, what pressures you were under. Then focus on your accomplishments, your catches, what you learned, how you will handle things when new situations come up and your passion for learning, improving and moving forward.

Nobody is perfect (including managements), but what we can learn from different scenarios is what matters. It does not matter if we fall, what matters is that we get up afterwards and carry on, that is what experience is. We learn all the time as we go along.

I think anybody that does not appreciate this and see this as a strong asset, a great attitude, probably would not be an employer of your choice.

There are two sides to every coin. I see your experience as a great side, you most likely do a lot of more good than no good.

Our union was very poor prior to this situation! That’s why I ended up here in the first place! The one rep wasn’t very supportive, they are suppose to work like a lawyer would and she didn’t! I have a new rep now since she left so hopefully it goes well! I am glad to see that you think it’s nonsense! My co worker calls it a fiasco lol! Thank you for the support this all makes sense!
