Fall 2017:UT Health Science Center Houston

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi all!

Thought I would start a thread for the fall semester! Anyone who wants to share their stats or anything about the application process can post them here! My stats as of now...

Pre-nursing GPA: 3.54

Science GPA: 3.67

HESI: 87.7

Pretty worried that my stats aren't good enough. Scored low on the A&P section of the HESI (80%) but made an A in the class...hoping maybe that will help even it out? I get discourage when I read through the other threads and see people get rejected with 4.0 GPA's and 90s on the HESI. :( I do have 80 volunteering hours at a children's hospital but I doubt that would help me enough.

Hello Ashley,

Currently I have an application in for Summer 2017, my HESI scores are also an 86%, so if I am declined for Summer my plan is to re-take and apply for Fall.

I have received mixed information from UTHealth admissions on the HESI.

Since I took it first with UTHealth's code, then a second time with HCC's code - admissions said I can't take again.

However, during an information session I asked the director of recruitment and she said I would have another attempt under UTHealth's code, regardless of how many times I took it with HCC, so that admissions told me incorrectly.

Since that is the information I was given, that's what I am going to follow for the future.

When I hear about my Summer status I will surely update you!

Would y'all recommend to retake the HESI if I made an 86?

How did you do on the critical thinking portion?

Thank you, Andrea! That would be awesome!

My critical thinking score was an 880!

So I thought I'd post an update since I called and spoke with someone at the school today, and I also needed to update my application GPAs as I incorrectly calculated and posted them on the first page. Oops! Anyway, I called them to ask about updating transcripts as classes become completed, the reason being, I applied to both Summer and Fall with an erroneous "F" that Lone Star is removing, and a "D" for nutrition that I am currently retaking, both on my transcript. I told her that I assumed it would be too late to send an updated transcript for the Summer application, which she said is correct. They will only look at what was received prior to the application deadline.

However, for the Fall application, for which the deadline is March 15th, she did confirm that they will accept and recalculate application scores based on what is most recently received up until the deadline. For example, my nutrition class, which is currently a "D", will be completed (with an "A") with grades posted by March 11th. Once completed, all I have to do is resubmit transcripts and they will recalculate it with the "A." Same goes for the erroneous "F" that Lone Star is currently in the process of removing.

So whatever grades or changes you guys may need completed or changed, be sure you have it done and your transcript in their hands (the adviser actually said "hot little hands") by the deadline date, because this can make a HUGE difference.

As it stands right now, my application scores are...

Science GPA: 3.67 (do they round up to 3.7??)

Pre-req GPA: 3.42

HESI overall: 94 with an 88 in AP

The reason this makes such a big difference is with the transcript corrections, my pre-req GPA will go up from a 3.42 to a 3.8. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who has changes like this they would want considered.

Another thing she confirmed was that the critical thinking portion of the HESI is no longer a contributing factor to acceptance.

The other thing I meant to ask and forgot to was about transcript evaluations, especially as it pertains to what is acceptable for an elective. I know from these forums that UT's transcript evals are hit-or-miss at best, so I need to know if what I have will suffice. Maybe someone can chime in about the electives...?

Whew...that was a lot.

Would y'all recommend to retake the HESI if I made an 86?

Ashley, I'm wondering the same thing! I passed with an overall 83.25%. I'm debating whether I should even waste my time and money applying to nursing schools with my current score.

All of you guys have awesome scores, you should have no problem being accepted into the program. For the last year, I've been trying to get to the point to where I can even think about applying to nursing school. I screwed up a lot when I first started college so my overall GPA is 2.5!

Pre-req GPA: 3.3

Science GPA: 3.0

Hesi overall score: 83.25

A&P: 76

Whatever you do, do NOT get discouraged. It's a long hard road to travel and there will be speed bumps and setbacks. It's just as much about the journey as it is about the destination. I had the same issue. My overall GPA is only 3.15 because I screwed around a lot when I didn't know any better. Took me some time, and I paid for it, but it has paid off for me and it will for you too. I re-took classes, and still currently am. It has cost me countless hours and thousands of dollars, but I have yet to let myself give up. Just do what you have to do and keep chugging along.

Thanks Casey for your encouraging words! I will definitely continue to retake classes until my GPA is where I would like it to be.

Absolutely! And I would also say, definitely apply, and keep applying. There is a place on the application where it asks about previous applications. If you don't get in the first time, keep applying. They will notice. Again...that's exactly what I did for this Summer and Fall.

Lol how funny! I guess they're going to be like, "man she is persistent, she must really want to go here!"

Hey guys! Does anyone know how to send HESI scores to UT Health? I didn't take it under their school code. Thanks in advance

Yes. I had to do this. Log into your evolve account and access your HESI. There is a form there to download that you will need to print and fill out with UT registrar information. Make sure you select to send your scores via email. Then scan and email the completed form to the email address provided by evolve and include in the email that you want your scores sent to UT health registrars office. Mine took 7 days to get to them and get processed, start to finish.
