Fall 2017:UT Health Science Center Houston

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi all!

Thought I would start a thread for the fall semester! Anyone who wants to share their stats or anything about the application process can post them here! My stats as of now...

Pre-nursing GPA: 3.54

Science GPA: 3.67

HESI: 87.7

Pretty worried that my stats aren't good enough. Scored low on the A&P section of the HESI (80%) but made an A in the class...hoping maybe that will help even it out? I get discourage when I read through the other threads and see people get rejected with 4.0 GPA's and 90s on the HESI. :( I do have 80 volunteering hours at a children's hospital but I doubt that would help me enough.

Yeah, I was going to use a speech class and a biology fundamentals class!

Hey everyone!

I thought I'd include myself on this thread as I applied for Fall 2017 just a couple of weeks ago. Seeing the past threads, the whole process seems pretty daunting. I've seen excellent gpas and HESI scores get denied entry, which makes me think there are a ton of incredibly smart people to choose from.

Here's where I'm at so far:

Pre-req GPA: 3.91

Science GPA: 4.0

HESI -

Math: 98

Reading: 96

Grammar: 90

Vocab: 98

A&P: 88

Cumulative: 94.0%

I've not yet taken A&P II and I think that hurt me a bit on the A&P portion of the HESI. I also have a considerable amount of pre-requisites left - which will be completed before the start of the semester - but I wonder if they're more inclined to look for applicants who are done with that portion of the process.

I have left: Intro to Phil, Art Appreciation, A&P II, and Microbiology (this semester starting 1/16) and then Intro to Soc for the summer. I was originally going to school for Economics/Finance and have an Economic Statistical Analysis class from UH that I'm curious to see satisfied for the Statistics portion - otherwise, I'll include that in the summer semester as well. I also have a ton of random electives to apply from my time studying Econ.

I have 8 years experience in medical - I was a pediatric medical assistant for a big chunk of that time. I am a non-veteran - which I remember being asked on the application as well.

I went to the info session in October and the stats that they gave for usual program acceptance made me think I was a shoe-in. However, reading the past threads from previous applicants, I think this is going to be a tough program to get into. They mentioned in the session that they had a record number of applicants for the spring semester. I know that HCC's ADN program was cut for a while due to their students not having high enough pass rates on the NCLEX, and I think that it has driven a lot more applicants to UTMB and UTHealth for their nursing education. I think the program (HCC) is back in action now so hopefully that clears out the applicant pool a bit.

Anyways (I'm a talker), I look forward to getting to know you all through this thread and I hope we can all meet this August in class!

Liz

Hi Liz!!

Your stats are amazing! If you'd ask me that's pretty much close to perfect! :) It's hard to see a pattern for their acceptance, though. Like you said I've seen people with average stats get in and then above average stats getting denied. :/

I thought I'd add myself to the thread. My name is Julie. I live out about 15 minutes from Galveston. I've put in applications at UTMB and UT Health Science for Fall 2017 and now it's just a sit and wait game. At 35, nursing will be a total career switch for me. I've been teaching middle school science for the last 10 years and I feel like I cannot make the difference in the classroom like I once did. Now it's all about testing. I miss getting to build relationships and knowing that what I do makes a difference.

I have a Bachelor's in Psychology and Criminal Justice and I also have two Master's degrees in Education (one is Educational Leadership and Administration and the other is Curriculum and Instruction). I finished all my prereqs during the last semester. As far as nursing stats go:

HESI overall score of 90

Math-88

A&P 88

Grammar-92

Vocab- 92

Reading- 90

Critical Thinking- 950

TEAS score of 77.3 (SOOOOOO much harder than the HESI was for me)

Science GPA: 3.35

Undergraduate GPA: 3.41

Overall GPA: 3.51

No C's on my transcripts

Just hoping I'm a competitive applicant because looking at my scores compared to others I'm not so sure, especially since I was told my graduate hours do not count for anything.

Hey guys. I applied for summer 2017 and just started my application for fall 2017. My stats are,

Overall gpa: 3.4

Science gpa: 3.75

Pre req gpa: 3.79

Hesi: 90%

A&P: 92%

Experience: 10 years as a CNA plus 5 years volunteer work at a hospital

(currently working as a patient care technician at the moment)

Classes left to take this spring: Texas Government.

Does anyone know when transcript evaluations generally tend to start coming in?

I just spoke with one of the admissions clerks and she said they don't always send them out and because there are so many applying this semester she has no idea when they will get to them.

Hey guys!

I just submitted my application for Summer 2017, and I also plan on applying for Fall 2017.

My stats:

Pre-req: 3.95

completing Intro to Sociology Spring 2017

Science: 4.0

Hesi: 94.8%

Math 96

A&P 96

Vocabulary 96

Grammar 92

Reading Comprehension 94

Does anyone know if we are allowed to defer a semester? I may have an opportunity to spend sometime abroad this summer. For that reason I am applying to both Summer 2017 and Fall 2017. I am hoping if I am accepted for the summer session they will let me start in August.

I was just looking over a few of the past semester threads and it looks like a lot of people didn't get transcript evaluations until after the deadline had passed - some even after their acceptance. I think nobody will find out much of anything until way closer to March 15. I did read that someone in admissions had told a prospective student that the committee first evaluates HESI scores, then - based on whatever cutoff that is - evaluates GPAs from those chosen. They make their decisions that way. However, there is a lot of conflicting info in all of the threads as to what they are looking for exactly sooooo.... we'll just wait and see? :)

I have seen the same thing posted; I believe it was in the Summer thread. Apparently their new process is that they rank everyone by HESI score, establish a cutoff, and then from there rank everyone by GPA, and then choose the top 120, or however many they accept. That means that the HESI is actually their primary focus for admission and at least means that there is now SOME kind of structure to the application process and what they are looking for. But who knows, right?

Would y'all recommend to retake the HESI if I made an 86?

Math 88

A&P 80

Reading Comprehension 86

Hi!

I thought I would add my stats!

Pre-req GPA: 3.75

Science GPA: 4.0

HESI Overall: 90%

-Reading: 98

-Vocab: 96

-Grammar: 80

-Math: 88

-A&P: 88

Also, I'm taking intro to ethics this semester.

I'm not sure if my stats would be considered competitive or not... I have a prior degree in elementary education, but I do not think that they even take that into consideration.
