Fall 2019 Lonestar Hopefuls

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey everybody. I'm not sure if it's too early but I'm making this page for anybody who is applying to the nursing program at Lonestar College for the Fall of 2019. Looks like Montgomery, Cyfair, and North Harris have applications from Jan 7-April 12. Good luck to everyone!

Is Lab once a week or twice a week like Lecture?

This is from Anjelisha in the Facebook group. I think it’d also be helpful for everyone else who got accepted into nursing school.

**This is lengthy btw**

You guys will be going to Lecture twice a week (likely Monday & Tuesdays; 2.20 hours), Lab one day a week for 3 hours, Clinical one day a week for 10 hours from 0630 to 1630.

You will have 3 classes (Lecture, Lab, & Clinical) therefore 3 grades will be reported at the end of the semester. If you pass 2 out of 3, you will not get the chance to retake the class that you failed so you'd unfortunately fail out of the program. Passing is a 75% however, they would round a 74.5 up to a 75.

In my opinion, clinical and lab are easy As in the first semester; it's the lecture part that is probably going to kick your butt. I say that because it's a new style of learning and may take some getting use to. The way you study for exams now, won't work for you in NS. The toughest part about this is that you guys have to extract as much as possible as well as the important things from 10+ chapters at a time and know how to APPLY it. You typically get 2 weeks in between each exam to study and will take them on Mondays before lecture, unless something changes. You guys only get one chance to miss one exam ? and you have to take it the very next day so try not to miss if you can help it, because it puts a hold up on the entire classes grades. Anxiety really sets in when you have to wait on exam grades lol.

With lab, this is where you guys will be learning all of your skills. There will be pre & post quizzes each week composed of 10 questions each. They are typically pretty easy and is also open book, but keep in mind that you only have one shot at them so use your one hour on 10 questions wisely lol. I would advise to set reminders on when the quizzes are due or jot them in your planner because it is crazy easy to miss one with everything that you guys will have going on. It happens to the best of us! You have a whopping 7 minutes to be late to lab before you experience a lockout and an absence ? ID badges are to be worn in lab or you'll be dismissed. There will be an LPE (Lab Practical Exam) at the end of N1, you guys will have 15 mins to perform a skill that is worth a large portion of your lab grade. So take lab serious even though we're performing on mannequins.

Clinical.. oh sweet, sweet clinical.. depending on who your instructor is, what hospital you end up at, and the nurses that you'll be working with is what will determine whether or not you guys will enjoy this experience. You all will be getting a book entitled, "Nursing Today", in it you will be assigned a chapter that talks about how nurses eat their young. It's so very true, however, go into it with you head held high and an eagerness to learn. This experience has taught me to be very proactive in my learning so if you guys get the opportunity to see and perform, do so. Rule of thumb though, DO NOT do things that you have not been checked off on in skills lab because it is a violation of the student handbook and they do take it very serious. Read those handbooks because there are some things as well as some drugs that you cannot administer for the simple fact that you're student nurses. If the instructors find out, you will be expelled so be safe and play by the rules. Know that there is more than one way of getting put out of nursing school, and failing isn't the only way. Be mindful and watch your own backs ?

Uniforms have to be pewter and everything else is white. White socks, white shoes, white undershirts, white lab coat, white scrub jacket. Patches have to be on the left upper sleeve on ALL garments. If you're missing a patch on something it counts as a violation against you. For example, you show up to clinical, looking mighty spiffy but you're missing your patch.. depending on your instructor you'd either get sent home or you'd simply get a "U" for the day. If you get 6 "U"s.. I can't tell you what would happen ? but it stands for something. So don't be a braveheart and test the theory ? NO artificial nails ladies ?

Now that I've completed my first year of NS, this is my advice to you guys.. STUDY! STUDY! STUDY! Don't pull an Angie (and I'm sure many other students) and wait days before to study for an exam. It. Will. Suck. I promise. Everyday study a little at a time, even if it's just for an hour or so. Leave the house and go somewhere quiet. Stay after lecture and go upstairs to the library to study. Whatever you choose to do, just make sure that you guys are making the time to study. It's detrimental to passing the exams. Time management has to be somewhat on the right track prior to this beautiful endeavor because they will dump a lot on you at once. So, earlier I said you guys have 2 weeks in between each exam.. sounds good right? Sounds like enough time you say?? Yeahhh, no. Big fat no. You have clinical logs due every week, NCLEX questions, projects, quizzes, and EHR assignments ON TOP of studying. It's not a competition so be of assistance to each other if you're able to. Know that sometimes you won't do as good as you would have liked, don't down talk yourself and doubt that you're unable to do this. Just try harder. Everytime. You will feel overwhelmed at times, it's natural. The program is only hard if you're not putting in the work. Simply put, you get out what you put in.

This is not to discourage you at all, definitely not my intentions. I wanted to over share so that you could gain as much insight as possible. Remember failing to prepare, is preparing to fail! Buckle up guys, you all are here for a reason. You can do this! You're made for it as long as you have the heart for it. More importantly, have fun! ❤️
