Fall 2018 Lone Star Hopefuls

Published

Hey everyone, just wanted to start a Fall 2018 page for Lone Star ADN/LVN future students!

Hi! I'm applying for ADN at Lonestar fall 2018. Just took my Hesi today and my score total is 7.36. I'm hoping this is high enough, because the Hesi is no joke and I don't want to take it again. Lol.

Specializes in OB Nursing.

I'm hoping to apply for Lonestar fall 2018, although I may miss the deadline with my A&PI :( I also still need to take the HESI. If I can't manage to get everything together in time I will of course be applying for Spring 2019.

I'm in San Antonio currently attending San Antonio College (will also apply for this program) due to Military husband but looking to move to Houston area this summer.

I was reading that volunteer hours will help with admission, is that something an advisor may have mentioned? Two young children and a career change leave me hard honto accomplish hospital volunteer hours.

I have to drive down down to meet with somebody after winter break. I would love any advise anybody has!

I'm hoping to apply for fall 2018. I have to refresh my A&PI as I last took it in 2002 with a B and am retaking english to raise my B. This career change all happened just recently so it has been a whirlwind. I'm taking the HESI for the first time next week so that I can take it one more time before the fall application deadline. I attended an information session weeks ago and was under the impression that a 7.5 would be good for LSC-Montgomery (accepting about 25% of applicants) with more slots for admission elsewhere (accepting about 50%). I just read on here that someone with approx a 7.4 was waitlisted on the spring admission period... I signed up for an 8-week A&P to make the deadline thinking that worst case my B can stand but now it's looking like anything less than an A won't do. Time to dust the cobwebs off of my brain.

Any volunteer experience looks good on your resume. They want to see longevity and consistent participation in the organization (showing up every now and then won't help you). They want to see volunteer activity focused on your chosen field (think Red Cross or shelters, not habitat for humanity). In Houston some good volunteer activities are the star of hope women's shelter, The Beacon day shelter downtown (you can sign up for 4 hour shifts online around your schedule it's a convenient and easy to stay involved) the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile if your looking to work in peds, and there are other public health mobile clinics you can volunteer for 4 hours a week, the harm reduction project is a good one that services the GLBTQ community, needle exchanges, and a good resource is the Episcopal Health Foundation they provide grants to public health programs in the area so they can tell you who might need help.

Just pick an organization and commit to a realistic goal, you don't have to put in 40 hours a week and give up your weekends, what makes you stand out is the consistency of your participation and the skills/ relevance you build from the experience that you can transfer to your job.

Hope that helps

Best of luck

Yes that was close to the cut off score for last year. My score was 7.55. I got in and just failed my 1st semester. As they say, I underestimated the beast.

Yes, it's no joke. I dropped out of a BSN program back in 2004 bc I was burned out, academically, on nursing after having done a nursing focus in HS and working as a medic. I decided to enjoy university as a business major instead. I've regretted it ever since. I saw a post elsewhere on here somewhere that failing the first semester happened to another LSC student a few years back and I think they just completed the program. I think every semester admission is hit or miss. I have a friend who just graduated in May from LSC-Montgomery and she knew of people in her class with 2 B's which means lower than a 7.4. I think I'm crazy (now) doing both these classes in a mini-semester. I originally didn't think I would be able to apply until next year but, found a way logistically to be able. Academically, we'll see!

Hello everyone. I am also planning to apply for fall 2018. I am yet to take the HESI. Does anyone know the department ID for lone star as I have tried to find it on the website but I couldn't find it. I also took microbiology in 2012, can I use it for my application? I believe it's not one of the required prerequisites that determines admission.

You have to take the HESI through Lone Star and you can only take it once every 60 days. I'm going to try and take it tomorrow, completely unprepared, so that I can take it one time for real before the fall admission cut off in early March. I'm not sure of a code though, I had to pre-pay online for it through the testing center.

Micro isn't necessary for application. Just English and A&P I. English does not expire but A&P does. Micro also expires so you will need to refresh/retake it, after you are admitted into the program.

Don't waist your energy on raising your english grade. A "B" is fine in English. They want to see your A&P scores. I graduated from Alvin and their policy at the time was even if you retake a course, the grade you are judged on is the first grade you got. So taking A&P in the fall and getting a C, then taking it again in the Spring and getting an A won't help you. Things may have changed since then, but from what I have seen it's getting harder to get into ADN programs. I had it easy before HESI.

As an experienced nurse who has precepted clinicals I can tell you they want to see you can survive the nursing curriculum. Focus on your HESI scores; it shows them you have the ability to keep their NCLEX pass rate up. You're sciences are a major priority, if you don't think you can get an A in an 8 week class it is better to wait to set yourself up for success. They also give preference to students who have completed the most pre-reques. If you can take nursing classes before you are accepted, take them and make sure you get good grades (many schools let you take Assessment, dosage calculations, pharmacology, or medical terminology before admission) DO NOT take two labs in the same semester, I don't care how much of a hurry you are in to start the program. Those classes are the ones they are looking at the hardest, you will drown unless you have nothing to do but school.

Taking ACTs or SATs if you are worried can't hurt. You don't typically have to include the score on your application. So if you do well, it is a bonus. If you don't they never know. My ACT score did a lot for me but this was also before hesi.

Good Luck To You All!!!

I promise, somehow you just survive. But it is worth it.

Thanks..Good luck in your exam....I am trying to apply to other schools as well and I read it somewhere that lone star cannot send HESI scores to other schools so I need to use their code to register on the evolve site to take it at a prometric center. Is there any other way around it?

You could try this Budget Code: 10-0400-9-04000009001-5933 I got it from lone star hesi ticket. Other wise you would need to call the nursing department and ask. If you take your hesi at lone star you will still have access to your score so you don't need them to send it anywhere because you can do that yourself. Just make sure that the sections line up with the other schools.
