Failed PMHNP - need advice please

Updated:   Published

Hi,

I scored in the 80's and 90's on BoardVitals and ANCC practice exams but I failed the test. I did horrible in Policy. My diagnostic information is below. Can someone guided how I can increase my Professional Role and Policy? The questions were completely different from what I was studying.

I would appreciate any help!

thanks

Sarah

It looked simpler because I study the heck out of BoardVitals, ANCC IQ test bank ,Mometrix, and purple book! Some of the questions were same and rest were different but with same concepts. Study chapters 2 - 5 in the purple book inside and out! You will pass! Since I study so much, everything seemed so much easier when doing the test. I was putting in all nighters! But BoardVitals is awesome along with the other recommendations above!

Boradvitals is very good, but it was a bit light on policy. Also, unlike Pocket Prep it didn't provide page citations. There were times that I vehemently disagreed with question answers and wrote the editors and was told they would make a correction only to see the same question again in the original format. Still, it is an excellent resource that I will probably keep for another six months just to do questions for fun and review. Also, for "general knowledge" and clinical0 practice improvement I would suggest three podcasts Psychiatry and Psychotherapy with Dr. David Puder. The Psychopharm Updates (from The Psychopharmacology Institute) and The Carlat Report (new in 2019 as a podcast). All have paid versions with CME's and greater access, but even the free podcasts are highly informative and will provide greater depth of knowledge and can be enjoyed while commuting to work or school.

Hello Sejas78,

I failed the ANCC PMHNP on Monday..... again! I really don’t know what more to study. I have studied the ANCC review book, pocket prep, I did the Fitzgerald review (which I felt was a HUGE was of money/time) last year, and the ANA questions bank. I did 80’s in everything and some 90’s in the pocket prep. This time I added the Lantern Review which I actually thought was a decent review of everything. I felt SO confident this time around and actually thought, “I think I passed!” until I hit enter and got the “failed” message. I kept reading this tread and I’m looking forward to the new change. Hopefully anyone who has not passed will benefit from the change and pass. I’m going to look into the board vitals. They have a pass guarantee with money back if you fail so I thought why not. Other than that I really have NO IDEA what else to study. I hope the ANA questions bank and pocket prep do an update on their questions bank as well and helps guide us better for this new exam. Good luck and to anyone else who hasn’t passed.

Well, as you know from the thread above the test will be changing soon. I suspect that it will be more "nuts and bolts" and less policy (this may be to your advantage if the policy aspect was your Achille's heel. I would continue to review Lantern/Pocket Prep and Boardvitals and the Mometrix questions. Were it me my "next step" would probably to be to invest in Barkley's (online version) and maybe Lecturio.com (I keep this to review not only the psychiatric content but the entire medical school support curriculum). With every question that you miss (from any of the above resources) do a "mini review" of the material surrounding that question and ask yourself "what would have I needed to know or understand in order to get that question correct". Also, I usually find that I miss several questions simply because I misread words like "except" or "only". In addition, I believe that the advice from The Lantern Review that if two questions are similar or opposite one is usually correct. I do believe that listening to psychiatry podcast's during exercise and driving can be helpful as well. In the end your tenacity will make you a more successful provider and be a blessing to your patients. I wish you the best and will try to think of some additional useful input.

I truly wish I could help you. I am in the same boat. I graduated from 5/19. I have been studying for the PMHNP BC since graduation. I took the Barkley live review course, the Fitzgerald online course, and The ANCC purple book, and read all of these books front to back at least 3 times and I made flashcards and answering the questions. I am not sure where I went wrong on the exam but I failed. I am not a happy camper I feel stupid.

Did the score review at least provide insight into your weak areas?

I failed the exam today. I was informed that I would receive an E-mail with the score review results.

I would add pocket prep and boardvitals to your game plan. If nothing else the new version in December may prove to be a better exam.

Hello Myoglobin,

I am not clear. What specifically are you referring to when you mention "the medical." I did notice some medical questions on the PMHNP BC today I was not prepared for that. If you clarify this I am sure it would help me a great deal. "I keep this to review not only the psychiatric content but the entire medical school support curriculum)"? Thank you.

Please get Boardvitals. I passed the test after 3rd try. That is the best resource for me.
