Failed Orientation

Nurses General Nursing

Updated:   Published

Hi all, I was hired as a new grad in an ED about 5 months ago. I was recently removed from the ED for being unsuccessful in my orientation (which I do not agree with and also believe my inadequate orientation played a part).

I am still an "active" employee at the hospital, as they transferred me to work on a different unit this week.

I hate the new unit I'm on, I miss everything about the ED. This unit is really making me miserable and making me feel like I hate nursing now. That being said, I would like to apply to other EDs and feel as though my ER stint will hinder my chances of being hired (I actually applied to another ER job, and told them my previous ER job wasn't a fit for me, and I still ended up not getting the job).

This job is hiring again and whenever I apply, I get the "didn't get the job" email within a few hours (this ER hired tons of brand new nurses too, so I don't think experience is the reason).

Should I leave this job off my resume? And if I choose to leave it off, will the jobs I apply to be able to figure out that I am not a new grad with zero RN experience?

OF course they will find out you are a new grad when they look up your license says when you got it. Maybe they just feel like you are not er material just like I wouldnt be a good surgery nurse..Cruel to say but don't apply to that er job again I know you are hurt but move on to a job that appreciate you..do a year med surg and become a travel er nurse to get time under your belt

In some states it is called fraud to leave off jobs on your resume....put the jobs on.

Fraud to leave a job off a resume? What states would that be...?

It's also none of the employers business why you legally quit a job if they use that as an opportunity to scrutinize and meddle in your business. If they were terminated for diversion or something like that, then yes I can see that as misleading. No one should have to explain why they don't have a cookie cutter job history.

for example I was applying for perm job in ca for a hospital I had travelled nurse in. I actually forgot to add a hospital that I had worked in for few weeks which was a sister hospital to the perm job... hr told me it was fraud and explained I just forgot to add it to my resume and I was  still terminated. I was in my first week of orientation had put monies down on apt etc lost a lot of monies. The manager of that er and me both cried. and I regretfully went home jobless.

While this is a common belief, it is not accurate.  While a previous employer can provide any information they wish, so long as it is factual, many choose to only  provide dates of employment and eligibility for rehire.

If the OP chooses to omit this from their resume, that's fine.  But if the application states he or she must list all work history for a specified period, as many do, what do you suggest he or she enter as the reason for leaving?  While I'm unsure that being less than honest on a job application rises to fraud, if discovered it would be grounds for immediate termination.

in the state of ohio only information that can legally be shared is yes the nurse worked there and no or yes will rehire these are facts shared with me from several hr so maybe not a legal mandate like I thought and was told by hr people but unfair practice to share all without the person being fired in on the conversation

Yes, as I wrote many employers choose to provide minimal information, regardless of what HR told you, they arre free to disclose whatever the wish, so long as it is factual.  From Section 4113.71 of the Ohio Revised Code

Quote

(B) An employer who is requested by an employee or a prospective employer of an employee to disclose to a prospective employer of that employee information pertaining to the job performance of that employee for the employer and who discloses the requested information to the prospective employer is not liable in damages in a civil action to that employee, the prospective employer, or any other person for any harm sustained as a proximate result of making the disclosure or of any information disclosed, unless the plaintiff in a civil action establishes, either or both of the following:

(1) By a preponderance of the evidence that the employer disclosed particular information with the knowledge that it was false, with the deliberate intent to mislead the prospective employer or another person, in bad faith, or with malicious purpose;

(2) By a preponderance of the evidence that the disclosure of particular information by the employer constitutes an unlawful discriminatory practice described in section 4112.02, 4112.021, or 4112.022 of the Revised Code.

I have been terminated from jobs for unfair reasons. I think cause I am brutally honest and strong personality which leads for following policy and procedures to a t and that rubs some people wrong so depending on the job I will put not enough hrs or it wasnt a fit and leave it at that . Jobs in my experience the hr part is not going to call all these hospitals I have worked at too much time..some places want ref but just on file they don't even call them so I wouldnt get too shook up about it ...the key is during the interview to show your knowledge and share stories that show u knowledge much more imp now a days in my opinion....I have never done an interview where I havent gotten the job ...
