Failed nursing class need help

Published

Hi.

I am in a 4 year BSN nursing program. So I recently learned that I failed a course on Med-Surg Nursing. Since each course is offered only once a year, I will automatically get et back a year. However, last year, I had to withdraw for a year due to medical reason. So, in total, this means that I will graduate in six years, not the four years.

I have a couple of questions

1. How will failing a class and retaking it affect my chances of getting into a new grad RN program? how about one in CA?

2. How will the fact that I graduated in six instead of the usual four affect my chances of getting into a new grad RN program for working?

3. How will these two factors (having failed a nursing class and retaking it, and graduating in six years instead of the four) affect my chances of getting into grad school, like a NP or a PhD program in nursing?

Thank you so much. I feel so broken and destroyed right now.

Hi Mecha-Sorah, would you by any chance be in a UC? I had a similar problem, got sick in the fall of 2013, then came back to study during fall of 2014, then failed a clinical during this winter quarter. Small world... :o. I also hope to get a job related to nursing.

Where do you attend?

Hi, it's nice to meet you mecha sora, I went to UC ;)(check your inbox)

I got your message! I cant respond because Im not that active on all nurses. Im not sure if you are okay if I can respond to your message on this thread.

Sure, that's fine. I go to UCI. I hope you don't mind me asking, but how are you dealing with it? I'm trying to deal too, but need some ideas... :-(

(Sorry if it's a too personal question, maybe we can take this to fb or gmail? thanks)

Hi! Usually when one doesn't pass a class, there will be an exit interview involved to explore the reason why he or she didn't pass and how to prevent to do anything like that ever again. To be vague, I failed clinical because of a reason and the people asked me what do I think I need to do to be sucessful in the nursing program and we started exploring why I failed, etc.

Doing through something like this is not easy and I admire those who despite failing once, picked themselves up and didnt let the past stop them from pursing their dreams. If they can do it, why can't we?

I know the main reasons why I failed so I deal with the issue by examining myself and following what SON advised me to do.

Also, in the case of jobs, failing a class does not look very attractive (if they ask for transcripts) so meanwhile, get a CNA or EKG tech, etc, and get a job in a hospital. Work experience >> grades for the most part, or at least that is what I am hearing.

For example, I plan on getting a CNA and get a job either at a hospital of an SNF where I can enhance my nursing skills. Also, I plan on volunteering more at local hospitals and applying to volunteer in a program where we are patient companions of patients in the CCU/ICU, Oncology, etc and also the Kasier No One Dies Alone program (not sure if you heard of it but google it and you will know what it is).

This is a big setback and get a therapist if you think it will help you.

And remember, its not the end of your career nor the end of your world, even though it may feel like it.

Also, since you attend a UC program, I would believe your program also has the "fail twice and you're out" policy. Technically, you are given one more chance to be sucessful in the program. I would keep that in mind and be super carefully, whether it is clinical or theory, to avoid the worst possible outcome. Also, research on why other people didn't make it through and learn from their mistakes so that it won't happen to you.

And know that if worst comes to worst and we don't make it through the program, there is always a second option. Like maybe get an ADN, or A.S. in respiratory therapy.

Hi Mecha Sora, it's pretty much the same deal at this school. I failed a class so I get one more try and they don't count last year's medical leave.

I also plan on getting a CNA job and some therapy of course because gosh, I never planed to be in the nursing program for so long!

Thank you for the kind words, I wish people would talk more about their experiences in nursing school, especially when things go wrong and then what they did to fix it.

To answer one of your questions, not all employers ask new grad nurses for their transcripts. I know this because made it to near the end of my program, so I've already had a preceptorship, with a nurse manager no less, in a big hospital! He looks at work experience when hiring new grads, he doesn't give a fart about transcripts, certificates, etc. So if you get that CNA job, you're good. Also, know that the knowledge from med-surge and pathophysiology are very important in order to do well in Critical Care clinical. This also comes from personal experience. If you ace your Med-Surge clinical the next time around, then you should be fine in future rotations.

I wish you success Mecha! Things happen, that's life. :-/ I also explored why I failed my critical care clinical and what I have to do succeed next time. Of course the solution to that isn't easy, but it's definitely worth a shot. ;-)

If others can succeed despite their setbacks then so can we!!!

Awwwwww thanks

Im really scared of failing again and then becoming a college dropout... :(((

Then don't. Pull yourself together, with professional help if needs must, and go forth.

Thanks :D. Its really scary because the people said that I would most likely fail again if I don't make the necessary changes. I also found out that in able to return to the nursing program, i have to get interviewed to determine if i would be successful the second time around. If i don't pass the interview, i get to wait an additional year... -_________-

Hey laurellestars, have u had any luck finding a CNA job?
