failed nclex multiple times open to suggestions

Published

Hello everyone. I'm new to this site. I have been practicing nursing for four years as an Licensed Practical Nurse working in a state psychiatric facility. I have no wife, no kids, and I live alone. There is not much for me to say except that I have graduated from RN school with as AAS degree six months ago and that I definitely need help in passing NCLEX-RN exam. Kaplan and ATI (Assessment Technologies Institute, LCC) are absolutely worthless. I will NOT waste any more money on preparatory courses which boast a high pass rate which is meaningless to me. I failed the NCLEX 3 times.

I have been away for a while. I appreciate all of the good advice from everybody at allnurses.com

.... everybody is asking me did you pass your boards yet. Because they all know I graduated seven months ago. So whenever the topic comes up; I say whatever will be will be and leave it at that. I am numb, disgusted, and angry for all of the sacrifices I have made to finally graduate nursing school and I can not get pass this exam. Like I said before, whatever will be will be. :o

Derngrad,

Sounds like you've definately earned a TOTAL break from this tension. You are right in that worry about it is not working.

Hey, this may be a total off the wall but, when I was working my rear off trying to make my marriage work I went to see a Licensed clinical social worker whose focus was cognitive behavioral...anyhow, she really helped me to wipe out and eliminate my stress over it!

If there is any chance that you might be willing to interview a LCSW to talk with, it might be an option to pursue.

You deserve to "not" have the pressure that you've had for so long already.

Wishing you the best, whatever may come,

I work in a state psychiatirc faclility so I know all of the social workers there. Even though some of them are cordial and polite to some extent and give me the standard advice to not give up which I can get from anybody. There are some social workers I come to know act if as they are superior to nurses in general flaunting their higher degrees. They would not be sympathetic of what I am going through; and have no idea of what I am going through. I talked to other nurses who were willing to share their experiences and could give me some practical advice even though I may have heard it before. My father was a nursing supervisor for a state psychiatric facility for twenty years in New York. He encouraged me to not give up because it was hard for me but if I can do it so can you. He also said accept past failures as that past failures. You will eventually pass; because whatever is in me is in you. From everything I have heard from all of my family, friends, classmates, and coworkers in the last seven months; I think about what my father said was the most meaningful and sincere.

i just started mosby's q and a book. they have over 700 questions in each nursing class (700 in ob, 700 in peds, 700 in psych etc.. ) and they have 2 comprehensive tests. i'm weak in peds also and i dont know if i'll be able to do all 700 questions, but i think i'm going to do as many questions as possible. they dont have lot of critical thinking kind of quetions but they are good for reviewing information.

i also did practice tests with lippincotti book. i just did 5 comprehensive practice tests at the end of the book and i thought those questions are good. they have alot of critical thinking type of questions, priority, triage, outcome, labs, meds.

Don't know if you are a believer...but what really got me through was having FAITH and BELIEVING in myself.

I know what you feel. I had to stay back a semester even after I was able to walk with the rest of my class at graduation. I didnt pass HESI the first time, or the second, or the third. HESI was just a pain in the butt for me. And I was devastated as well.

I wanted to give up, but I kept thinking to myself I've already gotten this far...i'm not letting it go to waste.

Another thing that helped me was this. I made little postcards with the following on it:

I Can Do It

I have Done It

I WILL Do IT

on another I put:

my name, RN and the date of my exam

and underneath it, i put the word YES! in big letters

And on a third one I put:

I am a safe and competent bedside nurse, I WILL pass this test

I taped these up on my wall in my room all over the place I made multiple ones. For what you ask? To boost my self-confidence. I was feeling very sad and depressed about HESI that I needed to focus on NCLEX. It helped.

You need to boost your self-confidence. Believe in yourself. You already did the hardest part which was getting through nursing school..You can do it.

~If God Put you to it, he WILL get you through IT~

BELIEVE!!!

:yeah:

yes you r for sure right. We have all the power to make things happen. We have God. Through him all things are possible to whom believes in him. The power of prayer- use it. Don't doubt yourself. Take some deep breaths and a couple days to yourself to get back on and don't look back. Your going to start new from that day on. The more you think of the past the worst things can get. Erase your mind from the negative and think all the way positive. You'd be amazed how the brain and mind works!! You may say this seems is easier said than done. But try it. Believe, believe, believe. I am going to take NCLEX again and I am believeing all the way and being positive. I've learned not to look back. It can be difficult, but it will work. I'll talk later Take care and god bless.

couldnt have said it better.

I remember going into the 2nd and 3rd HESI exams already with the doubt in my mind "What if i fail, then what?" and guess what..i didnt pass. But I remember going into NCLEX taking in a deep breath and saying to myself, "I can do this, I will pass" and whenever I felt like i got stuck in a question i would take a break close my eyes and say to myself..you know this...just answer it! BELIEVE!!

Have Faith.

Even if your not catholic,or christian etc. Whatever religion u are...you believe in something...pray to whatever or whoever that may be. There is a higher power.

If you've been studying and you are pretty sure you know the material then it is possible you are just not good at test taking. I have a friend that could answer almost any question you asked...she could explain the in's and out's of nursing therory, meds, disease processes, etc however when it came time to take any kind of test she didnt pass. She finally went and took a review course that focused alot on test taking skills. That helped her alot.

Some people just arent good test takers.....either they read too much into the question, second guess themselves but once my friend realized that and took a course on good test taking skills she suceeded.

Good Luck.

Dergrad,

Those are not "your" counselor, those are coworkers!

BIG difference in that coworkers are regular people who do not have an obligation bound relationship with you that is structured, purposeful and to help you through and issue.

Your daily associates are giving you 'standard' well wishes on a superficially level of encouragement. A personal counselor would not be there to 'wish' you well like that. A personal counselor is not going to tell you what you 'want' to hear or placate. They are in a relationship to help you, not pander to you.

However if you feel that social workers are consider themselves superior based upon the attitudes of some of your coworkers then I figure you might definately not benefit from the assistance of one.

All the best,

Gen

Derngrad06 - I am so sorry this happened to you - I know that right now, things must seem bleak - Don't give up - just take a break from it and come back to it later when you can be a bit more calm about it!!

I will be praying for you!!!
