Failed out of Milwaukee Technical College...

Published

And while I have the chance to go ahead and write a letter of appeal I really don't want to. Even if I did I'm still waiting for a recommendation letter from my instructor that failed me and I doubt she will.

What happened was last semester I withdrew from the class because it wasn't looking so good, and then this past semester I actually did well, but needed a certain number right on the final exam and missed by .5 of a point and she will not give it back to me. I'm actually wondering if MATC considers that withdraw a fail or not? Anyone that is in Wisconsin go to MATC and know? I emailed the Instructional Chair about this very question.

But the whole point of this message actually was to ask if I should try online programs (and the only one I can find is EC) or to look to other schools. I have a lot of creidts under my belt, and bascially need to finish this one class and then I have one more full semester and then I'll be done. Anyone have any advice on the best route for me to finish this up? I almost want to do this online more than going to another school because of the fact they may try to make me take general education classes again, and I don't need to.

Anyone know of any other online schools besides EC?

Thanks!

Hi, Annie! I am from Wisconsin, too, and attend WCTC. Back in 2004, I went through the same thing you're going through right now. Due to some health problems, I was not functioning at the level I had in the past and was struggling in class. I was in the second semester of the RN program at the time. Approaching the final exam, I needed to get a certain score on that test in order to pass the semester. Well the chances of getting it were slim(due to my health problems) so I decided to drop out. Well they considered my dropping out as failing the semester. So now I, unfortunately, have an "F" on my transcript. But I went back this semester, 2 years later, and just graduated from the LPN program and am eager to go on & finish the RN program.

As for the online programs, I'd be cautious about them. I looked into University of Phoenix for their LPN-to-RN program because I am on a waiting list for the same program at WCTC. Unless I misunderstood, the person I talked to at University of Phoenix told me I would have to complete their Bachelors of Healthcare Administration(which sounds just like an Associates Degree in Nursing) first before I could earn an actual degree in Nursing. Again, unless I missed something in the translation, it sounded fishy. Plus, I don't know what employers think of these online Nursing degrees.

Anyways, good luck to you & I hope you stick it out. Things will get better. We didn't work this hard to get to this point, only to turn our backs and run.

I just finished MATC. I did online 109/110/113/114. Try WWTC or NWTC for online and finish your clinicals with MATC. Online is super hard but better than horrid MATC.

PM me with ?'s. I'll even tell you who to take for clinical:)

WWTC has summer 109......starts soon.

Contrary to what others may tell you, the Tech college system is a joke. MATC and Madison-ATC are okay, but the fact is that it (WTC) is doing poorly to meeting its share towards the shortage. The worst IMHO is CVTC and LTC. Weedout classes and deliberate time constraints are flushing out many good, qualified candidates...that is, after everyone sits on their stupid waiting lists for two years, just to be kicked out after one or two semesters. Best to go PN and then advanced standing later.

Totally disagree about tech colleges in WI being a joke. I went to a prestigious 4 yr college and have an oh-so-wonderful degree that is utterly useless that I am still paying student loans for years later. Went to (coincidentally) one of the two tech colleges you slammed and my experience was nothing short of wonderful minus a couple of isolated instructor experiences. However, you also have to realize that you will be working with some of these challenging types in the field, so looking back on it, it was much more of a real-life bootcamp than I understood at the time.

The other 95% was great, and in fact, dollar for dollar, I got the absolute best education at what I feel is a bargain rate. The instructors at the tech college were, far and away, outpacing their 4-yr counterparts in teaching acumen and the ability to relate real-life experiences into their teaching.

Is there a wait at these colleges? Of course! Don't expect to apply and sail through to get in the following semester. As far as 'weeding-out' classes...well yeah....I really don't want someone who is failing A&P etc. taking care of my loved one. I certainly hope there is a minimum standard of competence.

As far as clinicals, they were tough but fair in the vast majority of cases. If you are smart, you will talk to alumni and current students regarding recommendations for clinical and classroom instructors. You really need to be mindful of your personality and how it may (or may not) mesh with an instructor. A healthy dose of humility is also an asset.

if you are talking about excelsior college to get a nursing degree then you have to be an lpn or paramedic or something like that. i looked into it and they use to allow certified medical assistants to get a nursing degree through them but then they stopped that. other than that i do not know of any online nursing programs for students who are not already nurses ie: rn to bsn or lpn to rn programs. so you could become a paramedic and then take EC online if that interest you. i know that there is atleast one person that post on this site that did that and he feels that it is the best way to go.

i say if you really want to be a nurse then buckle down and learn where you went wrong and how to change it. if nursing is your passion i truly believe that you will make it. some people say how they would love to be nurses, but then don't take nursing school serious enough and fail out. i question how much they really want it...bad enough to study, really study 6 hours a day? Maybe, but probably not! it's like someone who is overweight say how they would love to be thin, but then they don't diet and exercise. i believe that they do want to be thin, but not enough to diet and exercise. and yes there are certain conditions that makes one overweight or perform poorly in school, but these are obstacles not insurmountable barriers. some people must just put forth more effort than others. i am not saying it was your fault you failed out as i do not know you or your situation, but if you are truly passionate about nursing then i believe that you will be a nurse. i wish you the very best on your personal journey.

best wishes,

jay
