Failed A Drug Test

Published

 I am pleading for some help. I am a nurse as well as my son and his wife.My son works at a hosp. and forgot to sign off on a MAR so was given a drug test. He failed the drug test but the drug found in his system was not illigal or any of the meds on the mar. I know this sounds bad but he is an excellent nurse and this is his first and only offense. He was fired and told to contact INS within 5 days of being fired. I will be the first to say he made a mistake and should be punished but I don't think he should lose his liscene. Is there anybody out there that has been through something like this? Please help or advise. Thanks, A worried and stressed mom

We kind of need more info b/c why would he be at risk for losing his license for something that's not illegal? If it's a narcotic that he's not prescribed for then he will have to answer for that. The BON will robably be norified and he will have to be monitored for a while. I know people make mistakes but that's big one.:twocents:

He had been suffering with pain in his neck and shoulder and a family member gave him a pain pill to help. Yes it was a stupid thing to do but should it cost him his career that he loves and is very good at?

Questions we seem to be encountering more and more often have to do with the effects of a criminal history on nursing licensure:

* Is it possible to become licensed as a nurse if you have a criminal history?

* Is it possible to become licensed as a nurse if you have a MIP, DUI, or other related charges?

* What happens if you are charged or convicted of a crime after licensure?

* Can I go to nursing school and/or be licensed if my record has been sealed or expunged?

* Will I be able to go to nursing school with a criminal record?

* What can happen if I receive a MIP/DUI/DWI or other charge while still in school?

These are questions that the members of allnurses.com cannot answer. The only reliable source of information is your State Board of Nursing.
