What's everyone's thoughts on this?
More classroom training? More clinicals? Or pehaps a residency like physicians complete?
Would be interesting to hear everyone's views. I'll also post a poll for those who wish to vote.
BTW, I'm in favor of a residency. GOSH how one would have helped me my first year out!

BP through the roof? NPER presentation with CP and R/O MI? NP
Routine GYN? NP
Chronic pain? NP
Acute pain? NP
GERD? NP
OA/RA? NP
Septic infection in ICU? NP
Why have an NP do that when a bachelors-trained PA can do the same things with the same efficacy? Thats a waste of a masters degree. You dont NEED a masters degree to do those things. Very simple common knowledge.

That sorta of careless disreguard is the reason we have patients who don't bother comming in for their illness.
I certainly hope you aren't that dangerous with your real life practice of medicine.

Explain to me then what is so magic about NP training compared to PAs. So far you have nothing but personal attacks, which means you have exhausted all logical argument.

Personal attacks? Yea... Ok.
Beleive that would be your department.
I'm not going to explain anything to you. I have patients and people who need and deserve my time. You meet none of that four criteria.

You have a good way of showing that.I'm not going to explain anything to you. I have patients and people who need and deserve my time. You meet none of that four criteria.
Truth is there is nothing substantial separating the training of PAs vs NPs. The extra years getting a masters dont improve health outcomes for patients, and PAs taking over primary care iwth only a bachelors degree is equivalent to NP practice.

help....... I dont much like being compared to a monkey!!
as a nurse practitioner I think I provide care which is complementary to that of the docs I work with.. I work from a different angle and am just as good in some areas as they are... which is why I see all the patients with asthma, both chronic and acute, I also get to do all the cervical smears!!!
I may not work from the same knowledge base as a doctor but I do have 14yrs training behind me and I object to being compared to a monkey- even if I do get paid peanuts!! we dont have PA's here... yet!
and Dave.. just a thought - over here its is the norm for a midwife to deliver babies.. the docs dont get a look in unless it becomes a complicated delivery! did you mean that docs deliver babies normally??? perish the thought!!! was taught as a midwife that pregnancy is normal and should not be medicalised in anyway!
oh and I meant to ask, yersinia21 ........ are you a nurse practitioner????????????

OK when did this suddenly become a bash Dave thread. I freely and proudly admit that we are friends but is all this childish insulting of Dave really necessary. It is beginning to sound like grade school. Dave is excellent at what he does yet I have never not once heard him say he is better than a doctor. I will however add that in my personal experience I get better care from NP's they take more time and delve deeper. That doesnt make them better just more in depth than docs tend to take the time to be. Now stop the Dave bashing or I am going to have to open a can of whoop arrse on ya. Play nice and check out the TOS of this board.
