Experienced RN With No Luck Finding Position

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hello All,

I am just wondering if experienced RNs are having difficulty in finding work. I know it depends on the area you live in ( I am in NYC, UGGGHH), and with all of the layoffs out here the competition is stiff! I have been getting down to the last two or three candidates on every job interview I have been on, but no luck yet. I am not feeling any desperation, but how about those who are out of work? If new grads are not finding jobs easily, how are the experienced RNs doing? Thoughts, comments?

Specializes in ICU.

Just an update from my end ...

I FOUND A JOB! PRAISE THE LORD! (and I'm not particularly religious)

It's very similar to my old position, they were looking for someone experienced

and were glad they found me. Me too!

It took me over a year of persistent applications and interviews, often applying to

the same hospitals over and over. DON'T GIVE UP!

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Congratulations on getting a job offer! After following your posts for the past year, I could tell that you really wanted employment.

Go to the ANA and NLN websites. Go talk to the deans of the TOP nursing schools. These are the folks that are perpetuating the nursing shortage myth. These are the ones testifying to congress about the shortage and the reason why the foreign nurse flood gate is open....

Like the ANA would actually listen to bedside nurses. They consider them slightly below scullery maids. I blame them as well as Peter Beurhaus (sp?) who is always quoted whenever there's an article about the sky falling because there's a "nursing shortage. If the truth got out, these talking heads would be out of their cushy jobs.

I go out of my way to avoid purchasing J&J products because they're just as guilty by putting out those soppy commercials encouraging people to be a nurse. None of these organizations or people are there to help pick up the pieces when nurses with/without exp. can't gets jobs.

14 years experience. ICU, TELE, VENT, REHAB . . .etc

Seen a lot and done a lot. Only have my ADN. Was told at last interview that the job was down to three candidates. One had more experience than me, so I was fine with that person getting the job. The other candidate (the one who the Nurse Manager was leaning toward) had ZERO experience and was a fresh BSN grad who handled a lot of projects in college and was PERKY. Hospital is trying to get magnet status. Lot of fresh BSNs on the unit. All of them had that "Deer in the headlights" look.

Hospitals are going to hell in a hand basket trying to get that Magnet status.

No way that you can tell me that a fresh BSN is a safer nurse than an experienced ADN.

Linda Aiken and her ilk would tell you exactly that.

Specializes in Psych ICU, addictions.
