Thanks for your reply. You are very lucky didnt need to have a supervised practice. Now im worried, i dunno where to get a placement. Im married to a british national also and got my idefinite leave but still i find it hard to get a supervised placement. hope anyone can advise me on this.

Hi greatxander,

I have sent my first application and have heard from my recruiter through Continental Travel Nursing that my second packet will "be sent soon". He also told me that it could take two weeks for the second packet to arrive to me in the states, and that once they receive my second packet it will take at least 6 weeks for them to make a decision...

As far as supervised practice goes: I have heard through my travel agency that the NMC has made the decision that all nurses who immigrate to the UK must have a 90 day supervised practice. (I believe that before this, nurses from the US/Canada/Australia did not have to do this). You will not be paid as an RN, and you wont be able to do anything under the scope of an RN practice. *If anyone has heard different information please speak up!

Are you applying through an agency, or are you trying to find work at a hospital on your own?

Im currently working as hca in nhs and they are just waiting for my decision letter and they will offer me secondment.. if not i need to find a placement where i could do my supervised practice... Im now on indefinite leave to remain in the Uk but still i find it difficult to obtain a placement.. good luck on your application... Hope everything will go well...

I'm not sure about this "before this" period, as the latest document printed on the NMC website pertaining to the Overseas Nurse Programme is still the 2005 one.

Ahh, found it. "All applicants will be required to undertake 20 days Protected Learning Time (PLT) and a programme of supervised practice (ONP) for a minimum of three months." (Link) Made last April 2. Hm. I wonder if they're creating an entirely new directive exclusively discussing ONPs, because that 2005 obviously needs updating!

I'm overseas trained, and had to do a combination of the 20-day protected learning time and supervised practice. So yes, I am obviously not from the US, which I think is the closest resemblance of the nursing curriculum from my university. Nothing to support this claim though; I definitely should look into this.

ANYWAY. If you're most concerned about the pay, how long the NMC wants you (or anyone) to be ONP course (mine was 3 months) isn't the only factor you'll have to consider -- look into how long the university deliberates on results and sends it to the NMC as well (mine took 6 months because they're crap), because you will obviously be paid (if you are employed on the hospital while undertaking those supervised clinical hours) not as an RN during all the wait. Look into the Agenda for Change pay scales (found on RCN) to see where they're paying you. HCAs are on band 2, Associate Practitioners are on band 4, and registered nurses are on band 5. Haven't completely looked into where employed ONPs would fall under, but my employment contract gave me a band 4 salary.

Yeah, I feel really lucky that I did mine before all this happened. My DH wanted to wait until we moved to England, which could be years, but the NMC seemed to be making things more strict than not (like not allowing ADNs as previously under UKCC), so I decided to go for it since I had time on my hands.

Hello guys, how long did u wait for the decision letter after sending pack 2? Im also worried, because I studied BSN 4 years but in three different schools (transferee) would I be concerned? Thanks in advance..

Thank god I'm not the only one who feels like they are jumping through hoops over and over. So I've been doing this process to nurse in the UK for about 14 months and I've just found out I need to do the supervised practice? I was only aware of the ONP. So I'm very annoyed as its never been mentioned. Currently waiting for the NMC decision letter does anyone know with the 3 month supervised practice do you can paid? In all honesty this has been a horrible process and I would definitely not recommend doing it. I hope it gets easier from here but I wish I just organised to work in a bar. :( I'm Australian, 22 and have been resisted for 2 years. Goodluck everyone!

anyone got any updates on their situations? i've also just got a decision letter after about 18 months for ono and 3 months supervised practice. what a nightmare! agree with the above, wouldn't recommend this process one little bit. boy the nhs are going to be in trouble in a few years when no decent overseas trained nurses will be in this country to help out...
