I lived in Nashville for 20years before moving to Houston, Texas in 2006; so I'm familiar with the city, hospital, etc. Where in the city are you planning to live? There are several suburbs within 20-30minutes of downtown Nashville(we lived in Brentwood). You have Brentwood, Antioch, Lavergne, Symrna, Murfreesboro, Green Hills, etc.
In terms of hospitals, HCA owns several hospitals in the areas but I've listed some of the bigger hospitals below:
I worked at Vanderbilt medical center, Nashville general hospital and public health department. I loved it, pay was excellent including benefits.
Hope the information helped
moved to our tennessee nurses forum...check out previous discussions re facilities and pay.
For what its worth- I worked at my first RN job in 2005 at Vanderbilt on 9North surgical stepdown. I think my base pay was $18/hr, night shift differential was a few dollars then there was also a weekend diff. I worked 12hr shifts with 36 hrs a week.
Also, the staffing ratios were good, they didn't try to work you to death. To me that's as important as the pay scale.
mufreesboro has been having a lot of problems crime related lately so i wouldnt suggest moving there right now
I live in the Boro. It's true that there is some crime, but no more than any other city that I have lived in(& I've stayed in a few). From what I can see, Nashville has way more crime than the Boro, but, depending on where you decide to stay, it can still be nice. I'm an LPN & I make $25/hr, working nights full time, 8hr shift, Mon-Fri, no benefits, & not hospital. Since RNs are supposed to make more than LPNs, your pay shouldn't be too shabby if you moved here, esp @ Vanderbilt (which I hear is pretty nice with great benefits).
Yeah, but there's TN then there's Nashville, TN. I'm up in Detroit, but from all my research it doesn't appear the Nashville area is all that horrible for pay unless you're comparing to the Phoenix/tuscon area or maybe CA. I chatted with a nurse who's only got 2 years of experience working agency in Nashville for $41hr. Shift diffs are way more for you guys from where I'm at. Our shift diff for afternoons and midnights is only $1.85; weekends is $2.00hr more.
Prn pay in Nashville would probably be better than you think.
Parallon staffing offers med-surg nurses $33/hr base, if you commit to two night shifts a week then there's an extra $5/hr (total $38/hr.)
Experienced nurses at Vanderbilt make anywhere from $24-$32/hr, depending on experience. As I've said in several posts, Vanderbilt just increased the base pay for all nurses.
Vanderbilt also has a nurse registry, the base pay there is around $40 (I think.) HTH.

What's nurse registry?
Nurse registry is just another word for float pool. Basically, you're a prn nurse who only works at the Vanderbilt hospitals, and you float to any floor you're qualified for. (You'll usually stay there for the whole shift.) Like all PRN, you can get called off, there are no benefits, but you pick your own shifts, etc.

My husband and I are looking to move from Tampa to Nashville, TN and I am curious as to which hospitals are the best to work for and what I can expect in pay (approx.).
I currently have 4 years as LPN and 4 years as RN (1yr in Med/Surg ICU and 3 in MICU) with my ASN and CCRN.
My husband has 9 years RN experience (3 Years Stepdown, 1 Year MICU, and 4 years ER) with an ASN and Trauma Nurse Certification.
Also, does anyone know what to expect as far as night shift and weekend shift differential? Do most Nashville hospitals offer overtime?
Do you enjoy living and working in Nashville?
I currently make $32/hr (prn no benefits) and $5 night shift. I will be staying PRN. So I make $65-70k/yr.
My husband makes $26/hr with benefits and some differential (he works 11a-11p) and ZERO overtime available. He will be staying full time. My husband makes about $60k per year.
Do you believe Nashville would be comparable?
