Expect to take nclex in December after, 1.5 years AFTER graduation - advice?

I took it once before after graduating but was not successful. After that I pretty much gave up on it and went about my life.

I'm going overseas until about october, but would like to get the ball rolling on re-attempting the nclex. This time I plan to use suzanne's plan in addition to Kaplan's nclex prep course.

My concern is that I have been out of school for so very long at this point and remember VERY little of what I learned back in school. I was wondering if anyone had any experience in taking the nclex long after school and if anyone has any advice for getting back up to speed. It seems like rather daunting task to re-teach myself 2 years of content that I pretty much already forgot :rolleyes:

Suzanne's plan is no longer available through this site. The main thing to realize is that you will most likely need more time to relearn a lot of material. There is nothing wrong with this. At this point, extra weeks or an extra month or two won't hurt. Be certain to give yourself enough time when you make your appointment. Good luck.

You aren't alone! There are a few posts from folks who have taken and passed the NCLEX after being out of school for a couple of years and there are a number of us (like myself) who have been out a lot longer than you and are planning to test in the coming months!

The biggest thing I think will be brushing up on content. I'm trudging through Saunders myself and it comes heavily recommended by many (new and old grads alike).

I graduated in '99, failed the NCLEX once and never retook it until April '08. Luckily, I passed! I felt like I forgot everything too. I started from scratch and studied for an intense, extremely dedicated and long 10 months. Start with Saunders. Read the Priority, Delegation and Assignment book by LaCharity. The NCSBN course was so-so. Kaplan Q's are good and very similar to NCLEX. You just have to set your mind to it and get to work! Best of luck!

I'm also in the same boat. I graduated last June, had a baby in September and just kept putting off my test. Now I'm really nervous about trying to tackle starting over studying for the NCLEX. I wanted to take the test before my son's first birthday but that basically only gives me 2 mos. Is this completely overambitious? I was thinking of taking the online Hurst Review, how are you going to prepare?

I graduated last May (2008) and plan to take the NCLEX in July or August. I was very worried that I had forgotten most of what I had learned but I honestly find I am doing better now. I studied last summer but I think I was so burned out from nursing school and under so much personal stress that it just wasn't the best time to study. This time around I am more focused and less stress and the information seeems to be making more sense. I do have to go back and brush on stuff like lab values, ratio to proportion, etc but it isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be.
