Excuses for Missing Work

Nurses Humor

How about a list of wierd excuses for not coming to work?

My favorite: I can't come in today, I'm having vision problems. I just don't see myself working.

I had an Rn call in 20 mins before her shift and said she had to call in b/c she ran over a rock on the way to work.

We had a nurse call in sick with the flu (she's also a friend). We called her that afternoon to see how she was feeling and she told us better. I asked if she thought she would work the next day and she told me she had to ask her husband. She seriously would let her husband decide if she should call in sick or not.

We also had a nurse manager who went out of town. The day she was due back she called and said her daughter was just diagnosed with leukemia. She called everyday and within 5 days she told us her daughter passed away. (her daughter was 20 years old) We did a little detective work and found her daughters phone number. We called her number and the daughter answered the phone. We asked if she'd been sick. She told us she was feeling fine, had a sinus infection a few days ago. Come to find out the manager had met a man online and was with him. She was fired and we never heard from her again.

Believe me, you're better off.

What about nurses that come to work and want to go home sick almost every night! We have a nurse that will drink something hot and make her temp go up or eat a huge meal with a reg. pepsie (she is diabetic) and make her blood sugar go up to 400 so she gets nauseous and throws up so she can home. Or she c/o aches and pains to where she covers up with a blanket and passes her meds in a w/c so I (the supervisor) will feel sorry for her and offer to take over for her so she can home?

I think you need to work with HR and find a way to get rid of her. If you like her and want to try to help her, sit down and level with her first, to give her a chance to shape up. If it doesn't work, get her gone.

I don't have a garage so I park my car on the street.

One day I was going to work and I noticed that some dingbat had crashed into the back of the car. It was no longer legally drivable.

I phoned up work and said I would be late in as some one had ploughed into the back of my car and I was getting a taxi to work ($40 each way )

On getting to work all the staff were conserned about me and asked if I needed to go to the docs...

Then it dawned on me... I had forgotten to tell them that I hadn't been in the car when it had been hit.

They were probably in awe that you would go to work after getting in such a bad crash.

nope, just a rock. She brought in pictures it was probably 12 inches in diameter. It was at the end of her neighbors drive.

Last year I was holding the supervisor phone while he did the "dinner" run. We were working night shift and it was about 2 AM. In the 15 minutes he was gone, security transferred outside calls to the line no fewer than six times. Each time I answered I would hear strange noises but no one would speak. They would just hang up. When Supervisor got back security had to let him in, and I guess they told him that he received a lot of calls. R came up to the floor to get the phone and quizzed me on who kept calling, did I take messages, etc. etc. I told him that there was no message to take :uhoh21:.

I don't think he believed me or he was rather disappointed in my apparent lack of responsibility because while he normally sat up there and ate with our two units he left and went back to the nursing office.

About 5:45 he was doing his rounds to pick up the 24 hour report sheet and he called me into the med room. As soon as we closed the door he started chuckling and soon was laughing hysterically. Supposedly the person who kept calling was a per diem CNA canceling her day and evening double. Apparently her problem was: My boyfriend keeps doing it to me and now I'm so sore that I can barely sit, much less push, pull and transfer people all day. I tried to call earlier to give ya'll more notice but every time I did he would start again and make it worse, so now I' canceling for tomorrow's shifts too....:yeah::smokin:

Ok, I have to say, that was probably one of the funniest things I've heard in a long time. Then the more I think about it, started to feel sorry for the poor girl. Every time she called, he would start again, but she called 6 times in 15 min... the poor thing :chuckle

Guess you really should think about it more.....some women have not much choice when it comes to being forced,co-erced...whatever....... makes it hilarious...dontcha think????

Maybe she called 6 tims in 15 minutes for help, maybe not , but what if?

Funny eh?

You raise an interesting point. While I didn't actually talk to her my Supervisor did and he thought the situation was hilarious. Her tone of voice was very nonchalant I'm sure, otherwise I doubt he would have taken the situation so lightly. Some men are just silly. I know my DH can get frisky when I am on the phone with my friends just so I can get off and play with him. :heartbeat I love hearing my best friend ask "Eeeeewwwww....What ARE you doing? Should I call you back later?!" LOLOLOLOL

I am a prn nurse at a local hospital and just got hired as private duty through a home health agency (prn also) My first day was to have been this past Sunday to orient with a vent patient. Monday I was to be with this patient 12 hours. On Saturday I was ill and could not hold my head up to drive, so I called the agency and spoke with a lady who was taking care of their answering service and told her I did not think I would be able to take care of this patient as I was very sick. She said "are you just not wanting to do this or are you calling out sick", I said "I am not able to work because I'm sick". The next day, Sunday, I called the answering service back to make sure they knew to cover Monday also which they did not.

On Monday I tried to see my PCP and was told he was out. My pcp office made me an appt with a gastroenterologist to check my liver for swelling and possible mono. I have tried to contact the home health nursing director to update them but they won't take my call. Can they legally fire me for this?
