Excited new school nurse!

Specialties School

Hello, I look forward to being part of this group. I had an interview yesterday morning and was offered the job yesterday afternoon!! They had a few candidates. I was sooo nervous during my interview I was beyond surprised they offered but excited. I knew for a loooong time I wanted to be a school nurse. I have been a RN almost 11 years. I spent 2 years on an adult surgical care unit. 4 years as a pediatric nurse case manager, and 3 and a half years working in a pediatric clinic. I had some time gaps due to caring for my babies. I will be working in a school with grades 7-12. Any advice/tips would be truly appreciated. I am going to join the national school nurse association, my state nurse association. I will read through this board as well.

Specializes in ER, med-surg.

I am also starting a new position as a school nurse next month! I have a year of med surg experience and I am SO GLAD and RELIEVED to be able to start in the school. The school is a totally different place and environment than the hospital and I am thrilled to have this chance!

I am starting this year as a school nurse. I have been a nurse for 3 years. My daughter is a school nurse and hearing her stories I just knew I would love it. I am the mother of a 17 year old son with SMI and CP and a 14 year old with CP, strokes and Brittle bones. I am an expert on IEP and other meetings if anyone has questions.

Best to all to each newbie to the field of school nursing and thanks in advance for all the advice and humor from those with experience.

I'm starting in the fall too! Excited to start (and nervous!) it's great too have an online community of peers since school nursing can seem so solitary!
