Is there any way to work in MD as an RN if you did your training at Excelsior? I know that MD doesn't license Excelsior RNs and does not endorse experienced Excelsior RNs. What if you go on and get a BSN? Does that make any difference?

Jan 26, 2012 I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the answer is that you can NOT get a license in Maryland:State Board Requirements - excelsior.eduThe Maryland BON is the best source for info though, especially about the BSN question.ETA: I thought you may be able to swing compact licensure as a workaround, but I found conflicting info. One page says most likely No...then again, another page hints it might be possible as long as you lived in the other compact state and not MD (otherwise if you moved to MD, you'd need the MD license that you can't get). So once again, ask the MD BON, as their response will be more accurate than mine

Jan 27, 2012 You can work in MD with a compact license -- I lived closed to Maryland and could have worked there with my Virginia multi-state compact license. But unless you can travel back in time and finish EC by 12/31/2007, you won't be eligible for licensure in Maryland under their current rules.Unfortunately going on to get a BSN does nothing in this case -- it does not change the original source of your RN licensure.

She just can't get directly licensed or endorsed (if she lives in a non-compact state) into Maryland.I'm just curious, and I've never even attended Excelsior :)

I contacted NC board of nursing and explained that i live in MD and did excelsior Nursing and would like NC licence. they were okay with that. i also contacted MD board of nursing and told them i did excelsior and "i have" NC compact, could i work in MD with that licence, they were also okay with that.so do your nclex with a compact state and work in MD then eventually endorse to MD.

Of course, Virginia has extra hoops (960 hours of RN practice time) for licensure by endorsement for EC grads, so that's not exactly a great option. I finished EC before they implemented that requirement and sat for my NCLEX courtesy of the Virginia BON. But like I said ... I lived in Virginia and worked with a multi-state license, so I could have gone up the road to Maryland and worked there as well.
JROB/RN/LPN 2 Posts May 30, 2012 But the law says you have to have your compact license in your state of residency. Maryland wont give you a license and neither will another state if you live in maryland. My original license in NJ and I can not get licensed in a compact state because i live in md and graduated from excelsior.

There is information on EC's website regarding this -- State Board Requirements - excelsior.edu -- have you actually enrolled already?
Hyperbaric4u 3 Posts Jun 5, 2012 HI,Yes, I am enrolled and am studying to take my exam for A&P. I knew about the 750 hour requirement and I actually thought about this for quite a while before actually enrolling. All of the Nurses that I work with really encouraged me to do this, so, I took the leap!!!!
