I am a new student to the Excelsior program. I am also a professional fire fighter and a full time father and husband. I have been able to minimize the number of required classes to 10 to complete my degree and my first class is Dev. Psych (Life-Span). I have found this program to be challenging, especially since I have not been in school for about 20 years.
My question is, when studying for the exam, what is the best material to review? Is it the text cover to cover, the chapter reviews, the chapter progress tests or a complete complement of all the above mentioned?
Please Help!!!

I found it worked great for my needs as I only had 1 year to get everything done. SO with this program you can go as quickly as you want. I am a very motivated person and had no trouble with the self study. The CPNE is the only time problem as you have to have all the nursing courses done before they will allow you to book the CPNE which is the clinical testing. And it may be 6 mos from the date you booked it , just to make you aware.
God luck it is so worth doing!!!

Wow, 6 months! What if you fail, how many times can you repeat CPNE??
Thanks again for your response.
i think you can take the cpne 3 times total but i could be wrong. but if you study and memorize the critical elements so you eat sleep and breathe them you'll be fine. stress is the killer at the cpne. 3 of the 6 passed on my weekend. one girl thought the critical elements were just common sense and didn't bother to memorize them and that is what made her fail. for those aren't aware critical elements are points relating to a certain area of care that you must do and document on while doing the patient care.
for example these are the things you need to check for...
peripheral vascular assessment
my baby can scream
- mae (moves all extremities)
- bilateral pulses - most distal
- cap refill
- sensory test
if i if you don't do all of these things and ocument them you will fail this clinical component.
I bought the chancellor program and now $4000.00 later i am seeing the same material on E bay for pennies. i was doing good with chancellors until I got to Nursing concept 3.I failed twice with a D both times. Chancellors refunded my money for the course.I just joined Minnay :wink2: and it is awesome for study questions. The test are very close to the test questions.. They don"t give rationale but they are in depth.
Have either one of you took NC1. I need to know what I should be consentrating on?
I just took the NC1 on 6/20. Concentrate on nursing process: ADPIE, wound care, infection process...several med./IV questions, but very simple. Know about medicines that can be crushed. Study about in hospital infections.
Good luck.
Hi,I am also a student through Excelsior.I'm still pretty new to it all.I have completed Lifespan.I used the recommended textbook and workbook listed in the content guide. The advice everyone has given is very good.I have not use any of the study guides yet.I do try to buy my books from ebay or half.com (even better),I did not do that at first and spent a lot of money on books at EC bookstore, also cheaper to buy one edition earlier than advised in content guide. I have heard good and bad re:study guides. Some say they are great, others that there is not enough info to prepare them for the exams.I'm sure they are quicker to get through.I am currently an LPN and sometimes wonder if I'm crazy for attempting this online study route,it is not easy.Good luck with your studies whatever you decide to do.God bless!:welcome:
