So being an EMT is just one course is it. That is a bunch of houwy. Becoming an EMT is hard. You have a lot of self doubt and you have to learn on the job. It is a combined PSY, OB, and Cardiac class in one. I have several people that I have trained over the years tell me it is a life changing, attitude adjusting, and down right filthy class. You don't get alot of recogination because you are (just) an ambulance driver. Just to let you know, if I had an emergency, I want an EMT or Paramedic because they deal with the PSy of the call and not just the physical.
I had to deal with that during my nursing career several times. Think before you speak cause it could come back and bite you in the buttocks. This lady still holds her EMT- P. which started as an EMT.
Darn right we worked our butts off! I worked too hard for my EMT-P to give it up now! Plus I can't even begin to express how much depth it's added to my nursing practice. You can't really explain it to someone who hasn't been there, either...sort of like trying to get a guy to truly empathize childbirth, or a gal to empathize getting kicked in the family jewels...
Still licensed and certified as a medic--practicing as both medic and RN--and loving it still--

My husband has his EMT license, however, he has never made it a "full" time job. He volunteers with our local fire dept. and has worked weekends at our local ambulance base. But after so many years of being an EMT, he has decided he wants to be an RN. He defintely is a trauma junky! The problem we are running into is he won't be able to quit work while he goes to school and locally I can't find anywhere that is not a full-time days nursing course. Is there anywhere that you know of that because he is an EMT he can do the distance learning route? He does not have an Associate's, so he would be starting from scratch.

The only program that I know of where EMTs can become an RN is Excelsior College (unless you live and work in NJ) . He could do it part time at a distance. There are people attending that I am sure will comment. All other distance programs require that you be an RN. Good luck.
