anyone have any comments, ideas, thoughts, info or know anything or anyone who has gone through this program? i just lack my advance nursing classes and micro to obtain my asn. i was in a bsn program but had to leave the college i was going to so my hubby could finish his degree. the nearest college that offerred an rn program was 2 1/2 hours away. being poor college kids with a 1 year old at that time, that was not an option for me. so, i went ahead and got my lpn with the goal of finishing my degree when hubby graduated. 8 practicing years later as an lpn, i am trying to find an asn program. i have 2 years of college and my 1 year lpn education behind me. i want to get going and finish this. my local tech school stinks to no get out! they give us all run arounds and it is getting frustrating. they don't even have a test (net) anymore for entering nurses in to the program! they are thinking of a new test, so right now, they are not accepting applications into the program. whatever!
anyways, any help or thoughts would be wonderful! i especially wonder about the clinical aspect of it. i would have to travel 1-2 states away to do my clinicals. i heard the rue clinicals are near to impossibel to pass. are these clinicals the same way?
help?????????

Check out the web page for Excelsior college, and a lot of questions. Also here is a good resource for finding anything you might need to find out information. http://www.google.com. Just put in what you're looking for and 9 out of 10 you will find exactly what you are looking for.

i am an excelsior graduate 2003. i think the school is a awsome way to get your rn degree if you are a self motivated learner. rue is only a publishing company that sells study guides ect...your clinicles will be done in the region of your choice. there are a total of seven nursing exams that can be completed at your own pace :) which is a good thing when you have small children, hubby and work. i did not find the cost to taxing because like i said you can study at your own pace so what i did was work an extra shift when i needed the money for an exam. i usually tested every eight weeks so i had two months to get $150.00 for an exam. if you decide to do the program i think you will be happy. the clinicle were very basic new grad nursing nothing difficult if you went totally prepared knowing your critical elements and in control of your stress ( which i must admit was funny to do at times) the clinicle instructors all want to see you pass...the rest is up to you.

I am an excelsior Graduate.I loved the program. It is very difficult......but very doable. The clinicals are difficult....but again they even offer mock clinicals at places like Moore educational in Nashville TN and they pretty much guarantee you to pass if you follow excelsiors study guide and follow their clinical advisors advice.I loved the program and completed it in LESS than 3 months.YEP..........i did nothing but eat sleeps and study for 17 hours a day but I passed with a 3.4 GPA.Again........this is a very difficult program that demands intensive study. If you thimk its one of those "easy to pass" kinda things you got another thought coming because you will fail.this is a difficult program they do not spoon feed you like a regular rn class does.
I totally agree with your every word and advice
Thank you all very much! I thought Excelsior sounded much better than Rue. And I talked to 2 nurses who went through RUE and disliked it and did not recomend it. And both took 2 times to pass clinicals. They said they made it difficult to pass????
I have all my general ed classes basically except Micro. That is, if Excelsior accepts my previous 2 years of college and a few college credits I got in my LPN program. I took an on line Psych class last year and passed with a B+. Goofed up on my final because the computer I took it on frozzzzzeeee up in the middle of the test and then 2 teachers were yelling about a student who made them mad!!! After 5 mins of listening to them yelling in my testing room, and re reading my question 200 times, I finally asked the one teacher to please take her conversation to the office or another room as I was trying to take a final!!!!! so, about 6 questions in a row got messed up there! Otherwise, I liked it. I want to succeed and get my degree!
CONGRATS on you who have passed! CONGRATS on doing it in wholly cats!!!! 3 !!!! MONTHS! GEEZE OH PETE!!!
thank you! I feel better about my decision. I will have to travel at least an hour to go to college traditionally. M-F 8-5 job, 2 kids and hubby who just took a promotion at his job who now be required to travel 2-3 x's week....dont' think traditional college is an option right now.
Also, have you heard of any other states refusing to let the Excelsior grads practice besides CA that is?

Illinois is another state that won't allow excelsior grads to take the state exam.

Just curious...
Are those of you who have graduated now working as a nurse? What kind? How hard was it for you to get a job?
I'm only asking because anyone who is considering this type of degree needs to know that they might find it hard to take boards and get a job with a degree from EX.
I know that when I worked as a nurse recruiter my hospital and all the others around us did not consider that a valid degree and would not hire these graduates, even with a nursing shortage going on.

I have met and worked with many EC grads, and never had even one say they had a hard time finding a job. And after working with them, I would have never knew they didn't graduate from a regular in classroom program. I have worked in many cites in Texas, starting with San Antonio, Dallas, HEB, Corpus Christi, Harlingen, and Brownsville, just to name a few. I know travelers who have traveled across the country on assignments, and have never had a problem.

I graduated from Excelsior in 1983 and have had no problem as you can see by all the initials after my name (which I put there for fun cause I'm a beach bum)!

I graduated from Excelsior in 1989 and ditto to having no problems finding a job. No one ever says anything about it. :)
I am in California so this may vary for new grads, but 15 years later I don't think anyone much cares. :)
I read on the Excelsior web page that Ca has brought to the Board the decision to not allow RN's practice in CA who have gone through this program recently? Is this true? Excelsior has a blurb on their web page to not apply if you are planning to work in CA as an RN.
Thank you for your input! Did you like the way your education went? Was it hard to work with them or are they helpful and lookig out for you?
