Hi,
I wanted to know advice from those of you who have taken the excelsior college exam in maternal and child health nursing.
***This is my first exam that I will take from EC-- my public university requires 3 exams from EC
just wanted to know, what you did to study? what books do you recomend? and how long do you think one should study for this exam?
thanks

I havent taken this course, but if you look through the EC Content Guide...it will tell you the recommended reading for the course as well as the breakdown of each topic and how long you should study for each. Remember, this is a general guideline---I often times take longer on some topics and finish alot faster on others. Good luck!

thanks, the guide is not very specific on the book recomended.
I will probably just study the reviews and rationales book.
I just picked a date for my test, 5 weeks should be enough study!
and now my test is in two weeks, and i have barely opened the book! yikes! but i gotta pass this exam, so i am reviewing content tonight, and also tomorrow i will listen to my old nclex study program just on ob and peds-- helen feuer-- and then do questions on both topics galore.
i can't study too far ahead of time for a specific test like this. plus mix in work and a family.
wish me luck guys!

i don't know whether essentials of nursing care: reproductive health is the same as the one you are taking but i am taking mine in less than a week.
did you buy the practice exam? make sure to do so because they are really helpful and you will have an idea of what kind of questions you will get. i took the first one and the questions were pretty straight forward.
i am also using the saunders comprehensive nclex-rn and just finished reading the maternal chapters last night.
good luck to you.

They're not the same. EC offers some exams that other schools use for credit, both associates and baccalaureate programs, and this is one of them. I'm not sure practice exams are available for these exams, unfortunately.
BumblebeeRN, by the way, the guide is specific about which books to use -- they're listed on page 16 of the exam content guide. But anything that covers the subject matter outlined in the guide should work just fine, based on my experience with EC exams. Good luck!! :)
thanks guys for the info!
the guide is specific about what books to study-- and it happens that it is one of the books that I used in nursing school which is super super thick!!!
so I am studying the helen feuer review for peds&maternal portion & also reviews and rationales books & will do questions too
I've deffered this test but in a month I will take it!

No harm in this decision. As long as you use the extra time to really study the material.
I would say that knowing when not to take an exam and receive a failing grade is just as important as knowing when you're ready to take and pass an exam.
Update!
I PASSED!!! I took the exam yesterday, and although I was nervous because the test was at pearson, and it totally reminded me of nclex.
anyways, I just did questions from the saunder's CD that comes with the book, and for two days I studied.. sunday and monday, and I made it with a good grade :)
so basically, lots of nclex questions. :)
I'm not scared anymore to take the next two exams!
Congrats!! The first EC exam is always the most difficult, because you don't know quite what to expect. But now you do. Good luck on the other two!
