Had a patient the other day who was a surrogate (or in legaleez a "gestational carrier"). It was an interesting situation and she was a very nice patient. She was not genetically related to the baby. They used IVF of a donor egg and the father's sperm. The surrogate had her own children at home and her husband was present for the birth. The parents to be were present for the birth and so excited. It seemed like a healthy and happy situation for all of those involved. Other nurses told me they have had other surrogates, but the outcome wasn't very good. Have any of you dealt with this before?
I was told we had a bad situation last year with a surrogate...evidently she made a living at it according to other nurses who had had her as a patient before. Are there any regulations on surrogacy or does it vary state to state?

I've probably been involved in a dozen or so surrogate cases, either as the "mom's" nurse or the babies nurse. More than half were for gay couples (this was in CA). I only enountered one problem. I won't get into specifics but it had to do with the parents withholding information from the GC.

Yep. I had a patient who was a surrogate for her son and daughter in law. Seemed like all involved were happy. I also had a mom who said she had a baby so she could give it to her sister (but it was her's biologically). That one was weird.

yes and it was a joyful, happy situation for all involved in each case.

A family I know did that.
One sister was impregnated with her BIL sperm with her sister present. She has older kids who know everything.
She is now 'aunt' her husband 'uncle'. Her sister is the Mom.
Kids half sister is their cousin who grew inside Mommy.
I don't know.
I think I would encourage my sister to adopt but they seem like a loving family.

the insurance company would not pay for the babys hospital bill although it was biologically the fathers baby. at first they wanted the birth certificate and then they wanted the birth certificatte to prove that the wife adopted the surrogates baby. The baby is now two years old. The insurance would not pay for the pediatricians either. How can this be happening.
Famous indianapolis adoption lawyers handled the case but faliled to straightn out the transition to insurance costing the family thousands of dollars.

I had a friend once who did this for another friend. She already had 4 children. She didn't charge and did it out of the goodness of her heart. She had a homebirth. The couple she did it for were an older woman past menopause who had a younger husband, who was about 10 years younger.

Yes, I saw this recently. Gay couple from Europe; the embryo was created with one of the men's sperm and a donor egg. The surrogate was unrelated to any of them. It was a happy occasion for everyone.
