Ever Been Fired?

Hi to all!

Just wondering how many of you have been fired.

Got a phone call on my day off, not to report to work in the morning...just come at ten to meet with DON and Administrator.

Walked into room, to see termination papers on the table.

I have been at this place for almost 10 months...no write ups, only 2 excused absences.

DON said aide turned me in for not giving a resident meds...I said I did give them...MAR signed and all.

She snapped, "No you didn't."

I said, "Whatever, your mind is already made up." Smiled, shook both of their hands and said "Good-bye."

Now, how do I fill out applications? Do I put that I was fired for reason of leaving job? I have never even had a write up before, ( 3 yrs. CENA, almost as a LPN). I really don't know how to handle this....any advice is welcome and appreciated.

Ive never been fired but you know where one door closes another opens.

Fired or quit I ended up walking away from a long held job. CNA was caught repeatedly lying, stealing, not doing work by multiple staff. HN would not hold to P/P, finally when I walked in one day, found elderly patient lying in mess, wounds covered with feces, water spilled on her for attempting to get a drink after yelling for hours(according to other patients on floor), I got CN to assess situation, cleaned up patient and told HN I would no longer be able to work with this person. HN said "fine, we don't need you." Got my notes done, counted narcs, got my stuff and left after handing her my narc key. At times I have regretted it, but mostly not. She later fired but it took a patient dying to get her out.

I would not tell a potential employer that you have been fired. Just state that the job was not a good fit for you and you left. I know in CT. the employer can only give the dates you worked and cannot tell if you been fired or if you quit.

How do you learn what the laws are in your state??

my question is this. how many have any of you been fired than turn over to the state for any reason ?

Yup. And I was exonerated of all charges.

I've done a few interviews lately and I am very upfront about why I left the hospital. I tell them that I was burned out and I was very frustrated because I was not allowed to do what I was hired to do. My attitude was not good and the decision was made to ask me to resign. There was some politics involved as well, but the blame really lies with me. I also tell them that I have learned to express my frustrations rather than saying nothing but being grouchy about what was going on. I tell them that I have also learned not to take things so personally and that I try to remember not to sweat the small stuff. So far, it has worked for me. Both managers I have interviewed with so far were pretty positive and told me they appreciated my honesty. One of the managers was involved in the politics part and told me he was very sorry for what happened and that he really felt I got cheated. (I was an LPN working in an RN position under my paramedic cert and a group of five RNs with huge critical care experience applied there. They wanted to be hired as a "package deal" so they could carpool and there wasn't an LPN position available on the floor, so they couldn't move me from ICU to M/S. They got rid of me and all five resigned three months later). I think that it is OK to be honest about what happened, but also to make sure that you have taken steps to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Dianna,

Here in NY it isn't law but common practice to avoid being sued. All an employer will give if the reference is lousy is confirmation of dates.

Yes, I have been let go or fired whatever you want to call it. I had a great position as an admissions nurse, making great money & was offered a position totally different than what I was used to. I took the position like a total idiot:trout: Then one morning I was called into the NM office & was told it just was not working out!!! I gave up a great job & now I am unemployed, depressed & so angry @ myself. I hope to find another position soon....

Ingelein, all I can tell you is that I'm confused, too. And I'm too whipped today to try to explain things any better.

I think I might just not look for the next three months and blow through the RN on-line, take my clinicals in March if I can wangle it, and tough it out on money. LPNs are paid far too little for too much responsibility with too few options and I'm done. Please don't anyone criticize me today. I'm sure I deserve it, but I reallyt can't take it right now.

Hi There,

Sounds like someone else wanted your job and they needed you gone. So good luck to you and don't let anyone get you down. Hold your head high and I sure hope you do breeze thru the clinicals. Make sure you let us know about that. are you doing Excelsior or what online?

Hi, Melissa. Wow, this seems like ages ago!

I got a much better job at a really great facility.

And yes, I'm doing Excelsior. Taking Nursing Concepts 3 on Wednesday.

:)

I actually wouldn't recommend sending to HR. Don't give them any heads up.HR's job is to protect the company from lawsuits, not you.

I would in fact see a labor attorney about a wrongful termination case. I'm not a lawyer and don't know bu I don't see it's justified to fire someone for a missed med one time. If that's all there is to it as you say.

Best luck.
