Please provide your citation for the tax burden of the "average American working stiff" and how the taxburden of (presumably the average Canadian working stiff, whatever that is) is 48%. As a working American stiff, I can assure you my total tax burden is well over 40%, probably about 44-45%. (property, federal, fica, state, medicare, sales, gas, etc etc). Thanks to jerks on the fringe right, the government has had no accountability for eight years and has been free to ring up 350-500 billion dollar deficits every year. Unfortunately we are ALL going to pay a lifetime of hightaxes servicing debt with few if any of the government services the current generation of retirees enjoys. 3. As for the government "running" Canada's healthcare system per your continued infantile insistance, ONCE AGAIN, everything from the pharmaceuticals to the major healthcare providers to the employees in Canada are PRIVATE. The government is no more "running" healthcare than they are in the USA because the government happens to pool funds for medicare. If you want to persist with your perpetual rant that it's somehow different than get off your carcass and provide for us the major pharmacies and healthcare providers in CA and list for us the percent of government ownership. Whatever Canada's healthcare problems that are legit, our own healthcare systems problems are bankrupting the country and leaving 70milion ununsired and the taxpayers are paying higher dollars per capita for it. And while one can always find ancecdotal incidents to claim some horror or the other and no system is perfect, I still will maintain the Canadian system works better for the average Canadian than the USA system works for the average American having used both, compared per capita costs, etc. I'd also be idly curious as to what reliable citations you could provide comparing the TOTAL tax burdens of an American family and a Canadian family making the same earnings in real dollars. I'll anxiously await.

this is the kind of emotional rhetoric that has gotten us in the quagmires we are in, in my opinion. 1. Once again, the guvment does not "run" Canada's healthcare and the markets are in fact perfectly private. 2. Taxes in the USA are as high or higher than they are in Canada on working people. (go on ,tally up your fed income tax, state income tax, fica, local, property, fuel taxes, sales taxes, etc ad nauseum) and try to argue otherwise. The diff is as I see it in Canada you r getting something BACK for your tax dollars. In the USA nurses and truckdrivers pay higher taxe rates than billionaires and way too many of us still won't be able to afford to retire. Why so many of them feel more inclined to fight for the likes of Steve Forbes, the Walmart heirs and Paris Hilton's "right" to a tax-free life of loafing than they do for their own survival is a mystery that I will just never figure out.

Anyway, as I was saying earlier, and then I'm done here, but that book Imentioned, that's out now Sutton's "The No A**hole factor" talks about the loss productivity and talent that workplace bullies cost industry - finds that even those ah's perceived as abrasive but stellar performers, are hurting productivity and the productivity of everyone else actually rises when they leave. Much more. Underlying point: We all have to enforce 0 ah tolerance, not just management. Anyway, the book is easy reading,not a big timesucker, and best of all , if you are trapped in a situation where you are working with one or more bullies, it helps you deal with it. PS - and no, I'm not related to the author, an investor in the publishing house, etc.

The problem with that is, the people who are most likely to be bullied and abused ARE the newbie nurses on the unit (and/or in the profession) that DON'T have the resources to fight back successfully - they haven't got a support system, the faith of the clinical director, friends in the hospital etc to defend them. They probably don't have the experience to land several job offers in a few weeks either. Voting with the feet unfortunately does happen all the time but it's a total waste of productivity, talent and investment. Dare I suggest that people GTFU and act like the white collar professionals they are.

I couldn't possibly agree more. In the cockpit of an airline the crew MUST get along and there is no room for b.s. because of what's at stake. The same is just as true on a nursing unit but some people just still don't get it. I can't even believe the stuff I'm reading here. Or think I am reading. Let me double check that I'm not misintrepreting: 1. If you expect professonal courtesy you need to get a backbone. 2. If you don't like being bullied, well, tough, you're a shrinking violet and don't belong in nursing. 3. If you paid your dues being eaten alive when you knew virtually nothing as a newbie and had no support or comfort zone, instead of helping others, it's your right to instill the same grief on them that you got. This is what makes me think nurses are their own worst enemies. As Sutton says in his book: Admitting you're an a.h. is the first step to recovery. PS - and no, I'm not defending the types that want to throw an arm-flapping fit because someone looked at them wrong. But then that's not what we were ever talking about in this thread. But good nurses are made, not born, folks.

ps - apologies, just remembered you are still in high school. Obviously make sure you are good at math and science and evaluate if this is the right career for you honestly. Then in early in your senior year or late in your junior of high school start selecting and applying to nursing programs in your area. without a nursing degree you won't get anywhere of course.

a few suggestions: get your med/surg experience if you don't already have it. be proficient there first. then do some prn hours on the oncology and make sure it's your bag. get your oncology drug admin certification. you can also look at an M.S. in Oncology nursing - some univerisites offer.

I actually wouldn't recommend sending to HR. Don't give them any heads up.HR's job is to protect the company from lawsuits, not you. I would in fact see a labor attorney about a wrongful termination case. I'm not a lawyer and don't know bu I don't see it's justified to fire someone for a missed med one time. Unfortuantely I think the "nursing shortage" is largely manufactured. My opinion, but nursing is a second career for me, and they did the same thing with computer science all through the 90's , said there was a shortage which was really a ticket to open the doors for millions of visas, and eventual offshoring. I don't see a big nursing shortage, but then I'm not in San Francisco either. You will find sometihng - might not be what you want exactly. Be patient, and you may have to take something you don't want for a while (nursing home, etc). I send much good karma in your direction.

Lolita; Made me jealous too this January when I got a crash course in patient perspective for the first time in my life ( stomach ache to ER to admit, to 15000 dollar bill for a 5 day journey). If a conservative is a liberal who got mugged, a Democrat is a Republican whose job got offshored.
