evening nursing programs

Happy New Year.

I just graduated from the BMCC evening/weekend program and I worked full time the entire three years I attended nursing school. I will be honest in that it is a lot of work and will require a lot of your time for labs, lectures, and study time, but do not let anyone discourage you if it is what you want. Classes usually run twice a week from 5:45pm to 9:15pm with labs on the off days and clinicals on Saturdays from 8am - 4pm or so.

Some people found it easier to leave their jobs while studying, especially in the last semester because it is difficult and the material very dense, however, for those who could not (like myself) leave their jobs, you had to look deep within yourself and really make sacrifices to get through. I am married with no kids, but as you may or may not know, being married is a commitment in itself and requires time. Nursing school puts a lot of strain on life, be it work or your personal life and especially your free time (what free time?!), but if you have a strong support system, you will make it.

Despite what you may have heard, the staff is great and very capable. You have to utilize the resources they provide in order to get out of it as much as you can.

I am a Nursing 1 student a Hopfer. I attend school two nights a week (Tues & Weds) 6-10pm and Saturday clinicals from 7-4. Some come in three days a week if their clinical is on Thursday. I just completed two weeks and it is so much work, but the schedule is great for me as a working mom. After this semester is over, I will evaluate if I can continue to work through the program, but I don't see it being a problem as long as you stay on top of your assignments and studying. Like the previous poster stated, you will have no free time!

I have 3 pre-reqs to complete before I apply for the evening weekend nursing program in the fall (and I have a 4.0 in my pre-clinicals so I feel good about my chances of getting in.) How is the workload compared to pre-reqs? Was it a rude awakening once you actually started the program?

It is a lot of work. You just have to have proper time management skills. So far I am keeping on top of things, but it is very easy to fall behind. You have to make it a top priority. I expected this to be harder than my pre-reqs so I was mentally prepared.
