Someone asked me and I can't answer, but I knew where to go: an End Stage Renal patient on dialysis with chronic constipation and stool like rocks, always backed up. What food can he be given to get that stuff moving, maybe soften it up as well?
Thanks all.

You could try any kind of hot liquid. I don't believe renal patients should have coffee or tea, but perhaps some hot apple juice?

Perhaps fiber supplements??
I am not sure but I dont think they are contraindicated as long as they dont contain protien, just fiber.

It would be best to ask the doctor whenever giving any patient, family member or friend with ESRD any medication and/or supplement. If stools are hard as rocks, warm liquids won't do squat.

methylnaltrexone bromide (Relistor) injection for treatment of opioid-induced constipation
I have given this medication to post surgical patients with constipation induced by narcotics. I found it to be extremely effective. I WAS skeptical at first, yet the results were..... phenomenal. OMG I could not believe the results, within 20 min. of giving 12 mg sq, in the upper arm, and having the patient sit on the bedside commode, the BM was evacuated. The patient did not experience any severe cramping, or side effects just relief.
Hint hint: line the potty with a plastic bag, it will aid in the cleanup. Really.

Are his fluids severely restricted? I know dialysis pts often have to watch thier fluid intake....without water, fiber will just compound the problem. I'd look into meds instead of a food.

How about the old stand by: prune juice.

Prune juice contains a lot of potassium, which could be problematic considering the patient is experiencing renal failure.
