In the english class that I am going to take this fall, there is a diagnostic exam, journal entries, three essays, a midterm, and a final. How can I, like the rest of you 3.5 to 4.0 average people achieve such high grades in this subject and English 2?

Thank You,

TFRatchet.

Will your school accept a CLEP test for credit? I took it and got credit for English Comp II. Saved myself a lot of time and money, and I didn't even have to study (although some may have to).

I did the CLEP thing too. I wasn't concerned with my grades as I was with time. I knew I wasn't going to have time to be doing research and a bunch of papers. Just my .02.

depends on how long ago you actually took an english class. it has been a long time for me, 1982, so i had to get the basic english book, and refresh my memory on all the rules (which they have changed) and take notes. after that you just have to try, ask the teacher for help, and get peer reviews done for your writing. i stink at english, but with work i received 'a's in both classes. it is possible, if i can do it - anyone can!

Okay, let me rephrase my question. What strategies did you people use out there to achieve A's and A-'s in English 1 and 2. I am sure alot of you must have had strategies to do well in these subjects.

I personally am not the least bit interested in English (the subject) but I pulled off an A this semester. My advice, check out ratemyprofessors.com (if you didn't register yet) and find an easy instructor...worked for me.

Just stay on top of your assignments. I would do "brain-storming", rough drafts, go to the tutoring center, and the writing center to get help with my papers. I walked away with an A. Just don't wait till the last minute to write a paper and expect to get an A. Take your time and spread out the work. Hope this helps.... Also, myspace.com also has professor ratings. Good LUCK!

make sure you show up for the first day of class. get a copy of the syllabus and really look at it. make little notes on it if the instructor goes through it on the day he/she hands it out. follow the directions for all the writing assignments. if you have any questions in your mind about them, put your paw up in the air and ask. ask until you have clear direction of how the instructor wants the papers to be formatted when they are turned in. keep the syllabus with you always and where you can easily refer to it all the time. find out if your school has an english tutoring center where you can get help with grammar (many schools have this) and have them check all assignments you are going to turn in for grammatical correctness. if the instructor says you are to use mla style or apa style for a paper then make sure that is how you format the typing. make sure that the writing assignments are what the instructor is asking for. if you are asked to write about your opinion, make sure you are not writing about what president bush said last week. make sure your essays have some kind of organization to them and can be broken down into a very simple outline. if you have a computer learn how the word processing program on it works because it will be immensely helpful.

composition is one of the biggest targets of criticism by educators--as in, students are sorely lacking at it. it is important because as you progress in college classes you are asked to write more and more papers. this is how you are going to be judged on your ability to think. by the time someone gets to the level of a doctorate or phd (yah, right! you can see yourself there, right?) your degree is pretty much dependent on the treatise that you write and defend to earn the degree. in the senior year of my bsn classes i had to keep a personal journal of my clinical experiences that was a big part of my final grade for my community nursing class.
