EMT-P/RN in Need of Advice

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hey there! Let me start off by saying "THANK YOU" in advance for your time, input and advice. I have to admit, I've never felt so lost on the career front...

I've been a RN for a little over a year, but due to an on-the-job injury (assaulted by a patient), followed by multiple spinal surgeries, I've never worked as a nurse. I do have 15 years experience as a paramedic and work in an ER. (I was ready to sit for boards at the time of the injury)...

Due to my physical restrictions (multiple fusions/spinal cord stimulator implant), I am prohibited from bedside nursing. I am seeking a tele-health position (so that I can work from the floor if needed)...I just need a little bit of direction.

I'm hoping someone (hopefully more than one someone) can give me some ideas of additional certifications or additional education that could help me obtain employment. I've looked into Utilization Review and Case Management, but both require nursing experience. I have also considered obtaining a MS in Infomatics, but it's my understanding that direct patient care experience is also required to secure employment, even with the advanced degree.

I love medicine and have never considered any other field...any advice?

Thank you!!

How about flu shot clinics, MD office? Get trained in laser hair removal?

What an awful experience for you - but it sounds as though you have a great attitude and are moving forward.

The information you have found in your investigation into alternative career paths is going to be a huge barrier for you... clinical expertise is required for those types of jobs. Based on my own exposure to this process, if your on-the-job injury has resulted in a disability that effectively prevents you from working in your chosen field, you are entitled not only to disability benefits, but career counseling and cross-training that is needed for you to become gainfully employed once again. This may vary by state so you probably need to obtain information from your local offices.

There just have to be viable alternatives for someone with your skills and knowledge! Wishing best of luck & excellent MOJO for you.
