EMT new to forum

Published

Hey all,

My name's Nick and I'm brand new to the forum. I'm an EMT and I start the RN program @ Apollo College on April 6th. My mom's a RN and my dad's an MD so of course I had to enter into the bastard child of medicine, EMS. I've come to my senses and I am so excited to start nursing school. Anybody else starting Apollo in April? I've been browsing hospital websites gandering at jobs. It seems like UMC is one of the only places that routinely hires newgrads into the ER/ICU? Is that right?

also DSH laid off 20 or so .. LPN's and new grad RN's.

i know a new grad RN from CSN that just got hired by north vista.. i don't know about sunrise. they maybe hiring new grads.

i was just on umc's, valley health system, and sunrise's family of hospitals websites. they're listing jobs up the wazoo. if they're not hiring, why are they listing all these openings lol?

jobs being listed and actually getting hired are two different things, especially these days.... of depression? (it feels more like it anyway).... the hospitals have the jobs listed so that people can/may still submit applications for them, but it doesn't mean that the hospitals are "actually" hiring ... it just means that they're holding onto people's applications.

most of the valley hospitals are on a "hiring freeze", if they do hire, it's in very few numbers compared to the number of nv grads that graduate from all the schools. several of the nursing people i know have lost hours they used to work, a few have been laid off and some have moved out of state. nv is in worse shape than the rest of the country, unemployment has been trickling down into the nursing field since early of last year, or it might have started as early as late 2006, but most people were still in denial.

it's crazy but it's either hit or miss getting a job at a hospital here in las vegas. you either have to know people in the hospital or just be lucky and be there at the right time. i'm trying to find a opening for my friend who lost her job at UMC a job . she has been a RN for 9 years and was very dissapointed in not getting her job at UMC. now she has nothing... i hope we can get her something , like we did the other friend that couldn't get a job.

hopefully things will get better and there will be more jobs.

Hopefully is right.

Valley Health System is certainly still hiring, I know we are here at Centennial. Things are tough right now and everyone is having to tighten their belts but there are still positions open at most Valley Hospitals, you just have to look and be persistent.

To answer the question about EMS experience or acute experience helping you get a job, I would say absolutely!! Especially in my area (Emergency) new grads who have an EMS background usually do well in the ER. It is still quite a transition and a lot to learn but the EMS foundation is a great start. I have one new grad who worked as a medic until he graduated this past fall and I just this week hired another one who just graduated and will start in a few weeks here at Centennial. I do try to hire only one new grad at a time so they get a good experience, and honestly, I don't have open positions often here (people just don't leave, no turnover, they're happy!) but I don't and won't ever exclude new grads. I look for the whole person, not just the experience.

To the original poster, best of luck in school and your job search!

This is so true. I've also found that you really shouldn't pay attention to the HR sites. Often its a matter of talking to a unit manager directly and they get you in. I'm in Sunrise ER and was hired as a new grad. Practically stalked the UM there and he created a position for me. I had a job offer before I even graduated. Two of my buddies were also hired at Sunrise randomly, they went to job fair where the ER UM was present and were hired on the spot. Again, no listing for new grads on the HR website. I know some of our floors aren't hiring right now but the ER always is generally. It's just that sometimes the positions aren't listed. If you are really interested in a particular hospital or area I would contact those UMs or try to get clinical rotations in those areas to set yourself up for a position after you graduate.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot for your reply! I am so excited to start school!

could you tell me approximately the percentage of algebra on the math portion net test? also i was wondering what the essay you had to write was all about?

thanks....

Hey man, only around 5-7 ?'s on Algebra. You're gonna write your essay on why you want to be a nurse, how you plan on succeeding in the program, what attributes are necessary to be a good nurse etc, etc. If I can pass it, I think anyone can . Best of luck man, lemme know how you end up. I would schedule your test soon because the semester is starting April 6th.
