Electronic stethoscope?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I have had instances lately where I wasn't able to hear heart sounds. Both pts were rather large. I wonder if any of you use electronic steths and like them that much better than regular ones? Any recommendations? I'm using a Master Cardio now. Thanks in advance.

Stupid question alert:

How well does it improve your ablity to hear lung sounds? That is mostly what I use my stethescope for, and I'd love to be able to hear them better.

Just the requisite warning if you should get one of these high end scopes, they tend to develop legs. My Littman was inadvertently left at the home of my client when I had to "leave" by ambulance. It disappeared, and the only person who could have an interest in it was the licensed nurse who was given my case. So keep a keen eye on your expensive scope!

Also, I wanted to point out that if you are a hearing impaired nurse or nursing student, check out your state's department of vocational rehabilitation. I have received 2 stethoscopes through that department without cost due to needing it for school and in order to do my job, as well as hearing aids.

Thank you for your words of wisdom...Of cource iam going to do my home work....I could hug yalll....Keep it going...And a question yall can tell me about Hearing Aids too since i am old school....in my country(im from an Caribbean Island) we dont have much technology here. so....Any advices?

Rapid Badger: I can hear lung sounds well with my Thinklabs stethoscope also. See www.thinklabsmedical.com for more info about it. It's cheaper at www.allheart.com though.

Caliotter3 is definitely right. Don't leave your amplified stethoscopes laying around. They will indeed "walk off". Particularly if you work on cardiac/pulmonary floors where your peers definitely know what you have.

I have an electronic stethoscope, I could not use the traditional one with the ear pieces that go into your ears because i wear in the ear hearing aids. I purchased a cardonics e-scope. It is wonderful. I love it cause you can listen to the pt heart/lungs and still hear and understand them if they are talking to you. The scope is connected to a headset, like one would be hooked to an walkman, (Before the ipod).

I wear biaural digital completely in the canal hearing aids. They really aren't noticable at all unless someone is just looking in your ear. They are programmed to pick up on the frequencies that I cannot hear. Mine have a 3 settings: a normal setting for everyday use, a "small group setting" that is slightly amplified, and a setting for restaurants/parties where the background noise is loud. The settings can be programmed for other uses, that's just what mine are programmed for. The sound quality is great. Hearing aids are quite expensive. I think mine would have cost approximately $6000 if I had to buy them myself. My state's department of vocational rehabilitation paid for them since the hearing aids are deemed medically necessary for me to be able to work. Certainly I could not be a nurse without my hearings aids and my amplified stethoscope. Hope this helps. My last pair lasted about 5 years, hopefully this new pair will last as long.

I forgot to mention that I do have to take out my hearing aids to use my electronic stethoscope. That's a pain in the butt, but I've gotten used to it now.
