Next semester, my med surg class will be heavy on EKGs/tele. I was going to see about taking an EKG class over summer to make next semester, but a quick Google search didn't show me much. Has anyone done something like this?

My hospital offers them to employees only. For those who work on tele units.

You will learn what you need to know in your class. My Institution sends new nurses to a telemetry class when they are hired. Remember, you're learning what you need to know in order to practice safely as a day 1 new nurse.

Look to see if your local college/university offers the class for their medical assistant program. Buyer beware that the class will probably be heavily watered down compared to what you may need to know for your nursing program but it will provide you with the basics.

There are resources on EKG's on the Web, printed materials are still available----I recommend a workbook type where you can review what you have learned, one good book by Dubin covers basic EKG's, see if the fire/paramedics in your area offer classes. When I was working on my BSN I was already employed as an ICU nurse and could test out of the EKG class offered by my nursing program. They should stress the basic EKGs, which is necessary on any med-surg area now as most have telemetry. When you are hired as a graduate nurse you will receive training through your facility.

It's not worth it. Wait until you can take it for free from an employer. I worked a tele floor for 18mos, took the class and was able to read strips. I've been on an onc/palliative floor for a year now and I can only ID a few rhythms now. It's just not worth the cost, IMHO

Google Skillstat ECG Simulator. That's the only EKG course you need. It's how I learned.
