ED aptitude test with interview! Advice?

Published

Hi wonderful nurses!

I am so excited that I have an opportunity to interview for an amazing internship but I have a little snag... I have not yet taken an employment aptitude test. I was told it is just to get a sense of your ED knowledge, not pass/fail but I really want to kick butt!

I did do my integrated practicum in a level I trauma center but I have now been out of school (desperately fighting for jobs like so many of us new grads) for 3 months and I definitely want to brush upon my knowledge.

Has anyone taken one??! Any advice? Is this going to be more clinical skills, situational questions? Or is it more about "how you think/analytical skills"?

I have interviewed for a pediatric ED spot but so far so other EDs... If anyone has advice on potential interview questions or angles I should talk up, I would greatly appreciate your input.

I am a really excited about this opportunity and want to be as prepared as I can. I'll be studying away and look forward to your responses.

Thanks for helping out a fledgling ED nurse in need :)

I've never taken an employment aptitude test before just a dosage calculation. If I were to take a guess, I'd say there will be prioritization type questions (i.e. which patient will you see first?) ?!?! But I dunno. Just be confident, I'm sure it's all basic stuff you know.

thanks! i appreciate the response. good thing there are a ton of those questions on the NCLEX. i will definitely go over dose calculations :)

Delegation questions! And they are really big on pt satisfaction.

Like. What would you do if a pt refused care from only you, but you ain't got time to be in there your entire shift. We know real life answer but boss wants to hear, you'll delegate to your team members so you can make that pt happy

Keep your wits about you and remember some basics like:

Chest painers are all STEMIs until proven otherwise

New neuro deficits are stroking until proven otherwise

High-energy impacts mean spinal cord injury until proven otherwise - and CT is the gold standard

A psych patient is violent until proven otherwise

If they might be bleeding or are hypotensive, they need 2 lines... >=18's if at all possible

Bleeders need blood... and to have the bleeding staunched
