East Metro Detroit SICUs

U.S.A. Michigan

Published

Hi All,

I am interested in finding out what are some of the larger Level 1 trauma hospitals in the east suburbs. I'm pursuing my ADN at Macomb Community College (hopefully starting next fall). Just curious as to what my options are in the eastern suburbs.

I'm also curious as to which hospitals with SICUs in this area have contract options for school tuition that you guys may know of.

Thanks!

Alex

What do you mean by eastern suburbs?

I'm a western person.

Have you thought of Detroit Recieving hospital or the DMC?

I meant the eatern suburbs in the area of Warren, Roseville, The Grosse Pointes, Mt. Clemens, etc.

Detroit Receiving is definitely on my list, as I will probably be attending Wayne to complete my BSN.

Has anyone worked at Receiving or DMC?

Thanks,

Alex

Hi! I am from Eastpointe and am attending Macomb Community for my ADN starting in March. I would probably recommend St John definitely for trauma 1. The other hospitals are just too small (bon secours, mt clemens, st joes etc...) Most get transferred to St Johns anyways. Beaumont would be another excellent choice, but a little on the westside.

By the way, are you on the alternate list for this years class? I was, and got my call about a month ago.

Hello!

No, I did not have enough credits yet to even apply. I'll be in for sure next year. I'm just looking a bit ahead in the process.

Thanks for the info on St. John..Beaumont is also a great possibility.

That is awesome that you will start in March!! How exactly did that work? I was curious if they had alternate start times at Macomb. Is this only other start times that you're aware of?

Thanks,

Alex

Alex,

The whole process was pretty stressful. The competition is unbelievable. I had no idea going into it. I found out after I had already started taking my pre-reqs. When I went to talk to the counselor, she never told me what the odds were that I could even get in. When I found out, I freaked. This years class (2003-2004) had over 750 applicants with room for only 125 students. The applications were due Feb 15th. I received my letter in April that I was #128 (third alternate). So what happens then is that you sit and wait for your phone to ring with them offering you a position because someone dropped out. They have 4 start time. 30 start in Aug, 30 Oct, 30 Jan, and 30 in March. The tricky thing is that sometimes an individual will wait until 2 days before the classes start to drop out. In that situation, your phone will ring and if you can't start school in 2 days you are SOL!!!! They take you off the list.

If you haven't talked with a counselor that specifically know the nursing school protocol, I suggest you do so. This way you know what you are up against. Every year it gets more and more competitive. It isn't just GPA, your Asset test is 50% of how you are ranked too.

Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to ask. Whether it's about classes, teachers, etc... I did all my pre-reqs at Macomb and I could fill you in on some stuff.

My e-mail address is [email protected]

Take care,

sonia

My sister works at Beaumont Hosp.

She prefered it to many others she sought out after graduation. She liked their orientation program and thinks that overall the hospital holds to high standards of patient care. However, as a new grad she has been working MN shift in med. surg. and CA ward, seems it's hard to get positions if you havent been there 2 yrs. min. But she seems to have gotten quite alot of experience.:)

Hi Sonia,

I talked to some people that applied last year. The made me aware of those astounding odds. Of the 3 people that I spoke with, none of them got in. They were all in the 200-250 range.

I'm pretty much done with my prereqs except for A&P and Philosophy. I've aced all of the others so far, but I'm taking Micro right now. I did pretty well on my asset test, so that should be OK.

I'll email you with more specific questions about the program soon. Thanks for your help!!

Take care,

Alex

Definitely email me because I have some news on the Asset test you may not know about. They changed the whole ranking system this year. talk to you soon

I've worked St. John/Beaumont. I've enjoyed both.

At St. John's people stayed on the units along time. But CCU there was a great nursing turn over.

HI! I'm new to these forums, but had to put in my .02!

I start the nursing prog at macomb in Jan (registration is monday!)

I'm currently in micro and sign language (I've always wanted to learn)

I was told that there were a total of 1,400 applicants for 2003-2004 but approx. 750 had all of the correct / necessary grades, transcripts, etc by the deadline.

Anyway... I encourage you to talk to HR for the various hospitals in this area that you are considering (Beaumont, DMC, etc) if you watch the Sunday paper the hospitals will list various job fair events. You just missed several in October...... the ads said they give tours, etc. and I'm sure they would be happy to answer any/all questions that you may have!

Jenny

Hi Jenny and Welcome! I am pretty much new to this board as well. I start this March at Macomb! I can't wait just to start and get it over with. I have been waiting so long for this to happen, it's almost like it never will. Anyway, this board is awesome for asking questions and getting GOOD OLD HONEST ADVICE.

take care
