East Metro Detroit SICUs

Published

Hi All,

I am interested in finding out what are some of the larger Level 1 trauma hospitals in the east suburbs. I'm pursuing my ADN at Macomb Community College (hopefully starting next fall). Just curious as to what my options are in the eastern suburbs.

I'm also curious as to which hospitals with SICUs in this area have contract options for school tuition that you guys may know of.

Thanks!

Alex

lasoniamacaroni....you had said that they changed the ranking system for the asset, just wondering if you could tell me what has changed. I will hopefully be starting the nursing program at macomb in the fall, and thought that I already knew about the rankings, but maybe not.

I couldn't find anything on macombs website about any ranking info being changed.. but I have heard discussions about it.

Here are the entry requirements..

http://www.macomb.edu/admit/SelAdmReq.asp

I HIGHLY recommend you (1) have a quick talk with a counselor and (2) sign up for the counseling selective admissions meeting (call the counseling office for dates/times)

The counselor gives really good info and tips on how to "get in" and gives the average score/GPA of the last 5 people who got into the program from the previous year.

When I applied the last 5 people avg out to a 3.85 GPA and scored quite high on the asset (can't remember exacts)

I am a 4.0 and missed 2-3 questions on the whole asset total.

Good luck!

Jenny

In regards to the ranking, the asset test was allowed to be taken every 90 days and they took the scores from your LAST test taken. From what I have been told, this years applicants still take the test every 90 days, but they will take the best score from each part of the test. There are 3 parts. So, if you did really good on the reading 2 tests ago, but not so good on the test you just took, they will grab your score from 2 tests ago.

I am not sure if this is better or not. It seems to me that it is going to be even tougher to get in.

good luck in your endeavor. any questions, you know where to ask!!!!!

Has anyone currently in nursing school started working part time at any hospitals? I'm still working my computer job until I start nursing school full time, but I'm considering trying to get a job at a hospital before I start school doing whatever! What position title are the people that push patients around called? I'm just ready to start working in a hospital.

Thanks,

Alex

It's called a transporter. I did it for about 6 months at Bon Secours. I didn't last too long because of the strength. I was the only girl and now I know why. Pushing patient all day everyday on wobbly gurneys with carpet was killing me, so I had to move on.

Hi Lasonia,

What was the pay like. Pushing patients around wouldn't bother me too much.

Thanks!

Back in 95, I think I was making something like 8.00 an hour. Our department was combined with medical supplies, so we were always running slippers, blankets, and porta potties to floors.

It wasn't bad, I was just a weakling back then.

hi. i'm starting Macomb community college this spring. I was gonna sign up for the nursing program and all that for this school year but i have to wait til my son is in school for a full day. So i won't be able to start til the 2005 school year. I went to the nursing seminar and they just informed me that they changed the entire process of being admitted. They no longer take your scores from the Asset and your GPA. Starting this year they are giving the HESI test. you can only take it once a year, and its $40 to take it. Its because they have been having too many people applying for the program. Figures that it changes just in time for me to be affected. I haven't been in school since 1998, so i'm totally freaking about this Test. They said its really hard. Now you have to know anatomy and stuff like that. Has anyone had to take this yet at any other colleges around michigan? If someone has, please let me know what to study for, so i don't fail. it sucks you can only take it once a year. Than its a very long wait til the next nursing class. ugh... such bad luck i have!!

Hi!

I just started the nursing program. Thursday was my first day of class and I just found out myself that they did infact change the whole process. I guess things were just getting out of control. They had 1200 people apply this last time. I couldn't believe this hesi test is only once a year. That is an incredible pressure! The other thing that blew my mind was that you had to know anatomy. This means you would have to take A & P before you could take the test and pray that you got an A in the class because it will be counted on your GPA. I am not sure exactly how in depth the anatomy part is. Have you ever thought about St clair community. I have heard there is hardly a wait list, if at all.

I am in my second 8 weeks at Macomb.... we have to take the HESI test once per year as part of the curriculum - I will not take it until around Dec. of this year.

You can read up on it at http://www.hesitest.com and you can study for it by purchasing their study guides.... or just simply study N-CLEX material.... it is similar to the N-Clex exam.

The one thing that Nursing School stresses (and so does the HESI) is *Critical Thinking*. Yes, you need to know anatomy, etc. but all of that is simply memorization. Critical Thinking is a completely different frame of mind..... this may actually allow people to attend Macomb who would have never had a chance before. If you didn't practically ACE the Asset test and have nearly a 4.0 you didn't have a chance in the world..... NOW anyone has a chance if they prove they can critically think. The assest test was a joke IMO anyway.... reading, writing...... none of that tells them how good of a nurse I will be - it only means that I am literate.

My .02 - GOOD LUCK!

Yes, the ability to communicate effectively has been so overrated, particularly in the practice of professional nursing. :uhoh21:
