Duquesne Second Degree BSN - Class of 2017

Published

Hi everyone,

I'm happy to say I was recently accepted into Duquesne University's second degree BSN program beginning in August 2016. But I have been doing my research on reviews of this program and throughout this forum, and it seems that there are quite a few people with negative comments. I heard that the program has been changed and improved in the last year.

So I am curious - recent graduates of this program, honestly, what was your experience like? Would you recommend it? And if not, what didn't you like about it?

Thanks

What was the class you had lab for and where did you have it? I forgot to get a polo...oops

you have labs throughout the year spread out. the coat is the only thing you are allowed to wear over your scrubs or polos at any time or a plain white long sleeve shirt under it

Does anyone know if the program ends at the end of July or August. I see that for the people graduating this year they keep saying they are done at the end of July but I thought ours ended in August

Hey! Is there a facebook group for the Class of 2017? I'm having trouble finding it. Thanks in advance!

hi everyone, been following the comments, want to apply for 2ND degree BSN in fall 2017 at Duquesne. i have finished all my pre requisites apart from AP2 and Microbiology which am taking this Fall. i wanted to apply now so that i know if i can be accepted or not. Then the official transcripts in the application process, do i send them directly or my school should send them? i dropped the school of nursing an email still waiting for them to respond.

how is the program? Class 2016, is it manageable because its only 3 semesters? Where are the clinicals? whats the % of pple completing the program? in regards to tuition fees, i understand that u cant get financial aid, are the books expensive? How are the teachers?

Anyone here applying for Fall 2017 or have answers please drop a question or answer.

THANKS

I was accepted into the program to start in Fall 2017. The current students seem to say because of the accelerated track, it is difficult but manageable. Have your school send then sealed to Duquesne School of Nursing and they'll take care of the rest. It seems to take a really long time to get an answer from the nursing school with email.

Hi. I'm in the program now and it is manageable if you put the time in to study. I commute an hour to class everyday and work almost full time. Our clinicals have been in several UPMC and AHN hospitals in the city like Mercy, AGH, and then St Clair too. I think we have about 150 students in the program now and as far as the teachers go, there are some that are better than others. I like the majority of them a lot and they all want you to succeed. The books are included in tuition because they are all online, that's why you need an iPad or at least a computer. Hope this helped!!

I also applied to the program but I applied in the beginning of December. How long did it take from you to hear back on your acceptance?

I am doing phd in University of Pittsburgh but my roommate is attending second degree nursing program at duquesne university. He is getting lots of trouble from some of professors & dean of the program. As per he said all are lier and change their statements frequently. As per he said it seems to me it is professor oriented university and not helpful at all to students. Also they charges way more than other university who offering same program. He is really brilliant student & in Dean's list in his first degree, awarded so many scholarship during his first degree. He is currently in Depression & so much stress. My other common friend was doing same program 3 years back & force to quite because of no help from management/professors so he went to pharmacy program in Florida and glad to let you know that he is successfully completed his pharmacy. Don't make mistake by taking admission in this University. If you want save money, time & life then please avoid this university & this second degree nursing program.

hello all , I am happy we are all in the Accelerated BSN. I am just freaking out about taking so many classes at the same time. Will the professors gaves us the right material to study and are the exams in the same week . I am aware is 5-6 courses per semester.

thank you !

Hello Lari24. I am in the program now. Our first semester was 22 credit hours with 6 classes: Contemporary Nursing, Info Tech, Fundamentals, Health Assessment, Genetics, and Pathophysiology. We had labs/clinical for Fundamentals, and Labs for HA.

This semester is 24 credit hours and a lot of us are struggling, but it is doable. We have class 8am-4:50 on mondays, 8am-5:45 tuesdays, and then clinical days W, H, F.

We have had one test monday and two on Tuesday, which is really stressful. Midterms were last week and we had one each day M-H (one of our classes did not have a midterm).

The professors do give us all the material, but they often have to give us recorded lectures because they run out of time in class, which means we have 8-10 hours of class but then have to come home and essentially "teach" ourselves the rest of the lesson. We also have had a pediatrics exam every week for the past 3 weeks, so we are taking an exam, then learning "all" the material for the next exam in 1 day so we can take the next exam the following week.

It really is a lot of work and you have to spend a lot of time dedicated... but what else would you expect with a program like this?

Thank you for getting back to me!

I dont mind the long hours to study, what freaks me out is not having enough time to study, as long as is doable I am ok with it. Are the material given in class fair with the exams?

How are you doing ?
