Duke FNP Fall 2015

Hey all,

Just wanted to know who is considering going to Duke for their FNP next fall. I know it's still early to apply, but the deadline is just around the corner.

Anyone started on N590 yet? Are you guys reading the chapter and then listening to the video and looking at the power point? It's just a lot of material to cover in the next 2 weeks. I'm just trying to get an idea of how to utilize my study time wisely. According to the professors, we should dedicate about 3-4 hours of study time per credit hour per week. So, I'm taking 5 cr hours which roughly translates to 15-20 hrs of study time per week. Thoughts?

Thanks for your reponse! So do you remember approx how long after accepting your admittence you were assigned an advisor?

You said you can make your own plan, so most classes are offered year round?

can I just follow the plan the Director gave me but take it at a slower pace then?

Anyone know anything about the summer term 1 and 2?? and how that works??

I got accepted into the program in February. I was assigned an advisor sometime in June or July.

Yeah, you can make your schedule; however, there are classes that have pre-requisites or co-requisites and need to be taken in sequence. Some are not available certain semesters.

Your MAT plan must be approved before you register. It's basically the classes you need to register for term by term for the next 2-3 years depending on your enrollment status.

There is no slower pace. You'll be taking classes fall, spring, summer until you graduate.

how many campus visits does the fnp program require? is it 1-2 per semester? does anyone know how they do clinical placement? thanks

Hi NNP-2018, ( i was not able to msg you back, so i posted on your thread)

I just finished my program on 08/07. Sorry I am getting back to you so late. I was away on vacation for the last 10 days.

So, I did the Duke Family NP program online. I really liked the fact that you had notes and lectures at your fingertips. Only downside is that you had to manage your time well. I worked full time then I went to part-time/prn. It was challenging, but definitely manageable.

Pros-teachers were easily accessible and were always willing to help you.

Cons- clinical placements. My clinical placements were far away. I mean, I am glad that they placed you at the site, but my residency ended up being 3.5 hrs away. I had to get an apartment for the summer. It was challenging!

As far as tips go, I would say that you should get a boards review book early to study from early on. I did that my spring 2015 semester (peds and women's health) and it helped me a lot. :)

Good luck to you!!!

If you have any other questions, pls feel free to msg me!

Hey, what board review books do you recommend?

Hi everyone! I have some questions as I'm seriously considering applying to the Post MSN FNP/Cardiology program for Fall 2016. I know this is a traditional MSN program but I'm told the admissions officer and process is the same for both.

I know I have a competitive application as I was accepted to Yale's post MSN and declined last year due to how expensive it would be to move let alone tuition. However, I've been out of school for a few years (got my MSN 3 years ago) and I will not be taking my GRE (waived because I have a MSN already). Because of no GRE, I'm worried my GPA is barely 3.4 and although I have a solid amount of critical care/trauma experience, loads of volunteer work, teaching experience, and I'm a combat veteran, I'll probably only be part-time and I wont be working (I'll have a new baby at the start of this program). I feel like these things work against me a bit in my overall application.

I'm mostly asking what your essay questions were, how long, and how much effort you put into it as the application is not available online right now. I'm also curious as to what everyone's GPA was and how you think your interview went (whether skype, phone or in person).

Congrats to those accepted!

It took me a good 2 months to really polish my statement of purpose. I only applied to Duke, so for me it was go big or go home. I thought I bombed my interview (phone). Then was relieved when the professor said that she is recommend me for the program.

I got in to the MSN to DNP/FNP program! Did you end up getting in? I haven't accepted just yet as theres another school I'm waiting on. Yippee!

For those that have gotten in, may I ask what kind of certifications, degrees, leadership experience, volunteer work, committees, etc. that you included on your application that may have helped you get in? Thanks.

Over 5 years ER/ICU/trauma experience, plus 14 years working trauma in the military. Loads of military leadership courses plus a MSN in leadership and management. Tons of crisis volunteer work with hotlines and the Red Cross. Plus certifications in everything under the sun: TNCC, ACLS instructor bla bla. I think it's the entire picture as I also have worked as nurse educator, charge RN, and been a part of my local unions too BUT my GPA is barely 3.3 or so. What they seemed to like was my variety and experience, stating a few times it was refreshing to have applicants with experience rather than newly out of school.

Thank you! Anyone else, please share what you put on your app that helped you get accepted?

Also, those that got financial aid please tell me what form of aid it was and amounts if you don't mind please? It's expensive but it's a #1 program and convenient for my life. Sorry for all the questions. Thanks!
