Duke ABSN 2012

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hey everyone!

I was wondering if there was anyone out there applying to Duke's ABSN program for the spring or fall class in 2012. I'm going to apply, but can't decide if I should apply for the spring or the fall. If I apply for the Spring class- I will still have 3 prereqs to finish (micro, soc, and stat) which I can finish before the program starts. Is it crazy to apply to Duke with 3 outstanding prereqs? Should I wait until December and apply for Fall 2012 instead? At that time I will be currently taking the last of the prereqs. Any advice would be helpful! Especially if there's anyone who has gotten into Duke with 3 prereqs to go...

it's pretty ironic that as soon as i said that, just found out tonight that my nurse manager got a promotion and won't be in charge of hiring anymore. ...so...maybe duke is too risky after all...

KCbaby57 & others concerned about the price... Just thought I would chime in and say it's a big consideration for me too. I also applied to UNC and know I won't here for several more weeks. Right now, I'm thinking that I won't commit to Duke and wait another year and try again for UNC. Or, commit to Duke and lose my $500 deposit if I'm still worried about the loan situation.

Ha! It's a day away and I'm still not certain :)

I decided yesterday to decline and consider other options if I don't get into UNC. I just can't justify spending so much money on a BSN when I will make exactly the same amount as my peers with RN diplomas, and even making less working at Duke for 3 years afterwards than in other hospitals in the area. The tuition reimbursement is great, but, there are no guarantees about getting hired, there are no promises that it will still exist when we graduate, and even in the best care scenario it is taxed at 38% and interest sits and accrues for years while you wait for your lump sum at the end of each year. I just don't want to start my life in the hole, and make an RN salary and pay MD loans. I don't want to discourage anyone else from going, because I already have loans from undergrad and that is a major reason I am not willing to take on so much more. McRobbins--good luck getting into UNC, I hope we both do! But if not, there are other options out there. After talking to some of the current students who were in clinical in my unit the other day, it just seems like yes, it's a great education, but it's no better than UNC or Watts unless you are dying to have Duke behind your name or you are dying to start in January. I'm gonna wait it out a little longer.

Good luck to everyone, whichever decision you make! :)

hope everything works out for you KCbaby57! Keep faith :)

Take comfort in the fact that a BSN is a BSN is a BSN no matter where it comes from. :nurse: The only thing that matters at the end of the day is passing the NCLEX.

I am looking into applying for Fall 2013.. since you guys are already going through the process, maybe you can answer a few questions.

1. Are there summer classes? According to the course list, it says 4 semesters, but on the academic calendar, it mentions summer classes.

2. Does anyone know how many classes are on campus? I live 30 min-1 hour from Duke and am wondering how long I would have to commute.

3. Is anyone else worried about getting a job with Duke Health after graduation?? I would hope to so that some tuition could be paid back, but I know it is not a guarantee..

4. Any tips from others who have applied previously??

Wolfpack,

Summer counts as a semester, so there are 4 semesters, all of the classes are in the nursing school on Trent Drive near Duke Clinics, and clinicals will be throughout the triangle. There's no guarantee on getting a job, and you're only allowed to apply for one job in Duke Health.

1. Yes there are definitely summer classes. Fall, Spring, Summer, Fall

2. ALL ABSN classes are on campus with the exception of Statistics that I know of so far. The master's program is on/off campus.

3. Not personally worried about getting a job with Duke health after graduation. I'm actually going to the Navy so that's not my concern, BUT it really depends on how your preceptorship goes as well as your relationship with your advisor + recommendations so keep that in mind.

4. I'm a first semester fall 2011 student and all I can say is: PERSEVERE! The process can be daunting at times and all the waiting can drive you insane but if you meet all of Duke's min. requirements, take solace in knowing you've done the best you can do. Don't hesitate to ask questions, and DO go to Duke Days if you can. It really gives you a glimpse of what the program is about and gives you a good idea of how you might fit in. Talk to current students, we really want to help you. Above all, best of luck and allnurses helped me when I was going through this process.

:twocents:

well...i got in and accepted and paid the 500 dollars and began the onboarding process...but i have just given up my spot...I called and withdrew. I just cant spend that money...i would rather be out the deposit than around 60 grand...I will try other options. good luck everyone!

alyssa-good luck to you as well. i felt the same way which is why i declined my spot. apply to UNC, i just got in there and it's 1/5 of the cost. :) good luck to you, keep your chin up, and never give up!

Congrats KCBaby on getting into UNC!!! I'm so glad that worked out for you. I just got put on the waitlist for UNC with it seems like many others from reading the threads! I'm also on the waitlist at Duke so Im hoping to see some movement there since UNC acceptances are out! Is there anyone else on the Duke waitlist for January?

Pita8507,

I literally JUST gave up my spot for January this past Thursday....so that's good for those on the waitlist! :)
