DUI Conviction Before Getting Licensed

Nurses Criminal

Published

Hi everyone,

I need advice from anyone who knows anything about the process of getting licensed as an RN in the state of California with a DUI. I was convicted of a misdemeanor DUI offense in October 2013. Since then, I have completed all necessary requirements set out by the judge. I am currently in the process of applying to nursing programs. One of the programs called me and told me that because I have a DUI, it is possible that I may not be able to become licensed because the Board of Nursing is becoming extremely strict about licensing people with DUI's. I called the Board of Nursing and they told me that they cannot give me much information over the phone on whether I would be able to get licensed or not and that I have to wait till I'm ready to apply for my license to see if I get approved or denied. She also told me that my blood alcohol level plays a role in if I get approved. I blew a 0.13 at the time of the incident. This was a one time mistake and I have paid dearly for it and have learned a lot from it! The problem is I don't want to go through with the program and then not be able to get licensed considering how expensive the school is. Does anyone have any information or experience dealing with the Board of Nursing and having a DUI? Any help would be greatly appreciated, the nursing program I applied to is set to make their decision this week and they told me to let them know if I would like to move forward with my application so a quick answer is much appreciated. Thank you!
