Drug computation Help!

Published

Hi guys!

I had this question from my previous exam and I want to know what is the correct computation. I don't know the correct answer and kind a confuse with the difference between " in Every 8hr" and "for 8 hrs.

( i can remember the exact question but this what I remembered and simplified )

The Physician ordered to administer Medication-A, 1 gram in every 8 hrs. Your available on hand Medication-A is 1 gram / 50ml of D5W. How many ml per hr will you administer in 45 minutes?

Please help. ;) thanks!

I think that requires two conversions. The first would be the ml per dose from the formula of dose/have X mL= how many ml to give. Then I guess you would do that mL/time in minutes (45) to get your answer. I highly doubt you'll get anything like that on NCLEX. I didn't even get any math questions. I hope that helps...oh, and for the difference between every 8 hours, or 4x a day. Every 8 hours would mean you wake the patient and give the med every 8 hours. Versus 4 times a day, you can schedule that over the day. Most every so many hour doses are for like antibiotics and such I do believe =)

Thanks for the reply! Actually i just had that question this morning when I took NCLEX RN. I was so so so worried about that because it was 74th question and I had an easy question for the 75th which is only asking for S/S of Hypothyroidism. Which made me think I answered 74th incorrectly. Then the exam stopped and when i went home I tried PVT and GOOD POP UP came out. I hope i passed it and I have to wait for a week or 2 for official result because California doesn't participate in quick results.

I think i did the same thing.. because what i did is 50ml / 45 mins = 1.1111

And it told me to answer it in a whole number. so my answer was 1.

Good luck with your official results.

Geez, even though I could do that question sitting here, if I'd have had that on the NCLEX I would have fainted, lol! But, yeah I get the same answer as you. I took my test Thurs and also stopped at 75 with the good pop up as well. I'm counting the hours down till I can check the quick results. I heard it's 48 hours from the finish time. Which puts me at 2:30 today. I'll be back when I see those =) But, yea....I'm pretty darn sure we passed getting the good pop up~

congrats on the good pop up!!!

what resources did you use? and how was your study plan?

Lol! :lol2: I had like 4 computations, 2 of those took me like 10 mins each to answer. That's why i consumed almost 2 hrs to finish 75 questions. haha. Where did you take your exam? I think California doesn't participate in Quick results. So maybe I have to wait like at least 2 weeks for the official result. BTW, I've read some of you post from other thread that you passed already! CONGRATS :clpty:

In my own opinion, I would recommend Kaplan and Lacharity.

Kaplan question has the same way how the actually NCLEX questions are being asked.

Lacharity is a very good choice for practicing Prioritization and Delegation. I didn't answer the last part of the book which is about Case Study. Because it is not the way how NCLEX questions are being asked. So I prefer focusing on the first part.

And dont Forget to Pray!! :) Good Luck! and God Bless :)
