Hello all!
I'm just wondering if there are any out there who are in the process or have applied for psych nursing 2015 fall at Douglas college? I think I have about 11-12 points. How is everyone else doing? The sooner you apply, the better your chances are or no? (say a bunch of people have 11 points, will the person who applied earlier get priority?)
I've been going back and forth between BSN and BPN, but I know deep down in my heart, psych nursing is something that I've wanted to do ever since I was young!
Lets have some fun and discuss this topic!
Thanks for everyones input!!!!
xx
hey guys, i actually replied to all of your questions about 4 days ago, but for some reason it did not send and as a result, this forum was never updated with my reply, so here i go again:
i am in the diploma program, and am switching into the degree by january 2016, seeing as i have all the associated studies courses.
in terms of work load, there is NO difference between psychiatric diploma and degree students. we all have to take the same nursing theory courses that the CRPNBC examines you on. The difference is about 3-4 courses, of which, 2 of them are electives (approximately). in other words, once you start your PNUR program, you will not know which students are in the diploma and which are in the degree unless you ask them specifically. instructors do not care either. almost everyone in the diploma has a degree and as such, chose not to pursue the bachelors as they already had a majority of the associated studies regardless.
if you have taken bio 1103 and bio 1203 , this the first year of studying should be very basic..be warned, there is a CRAZY amount of reading you must do and you MUST keep on top of the readings if you expect to pass..also, when you buy the textbooks...BUY THE HARD COPY TEXT BOOKS NO MATTER WHAT TELL YOU (they will usually give you 20 percent off if you buy ALL textbooks at once via electronic PDF..NOT WORTH IT..IT SUCKS). the program is awesome. the first year is not necessarily learning about mental disorders, but moreso the nursing process and how to assess patients and basic interventions that you would complete.
the first year courses for PNUR are: therapeutic relations 1, clinical procedures 1, pnur concepts 1_ therapeutic relations you are video and audio recorded, this is MANDATORY and you will be doing this every semester, every year of the PNUR program and is NON negotiable. the clinical procedures class teaches you all the hands on nursing stuff you will be utilizing in the hospital. the nursing concepts 1 class teaches you all theory you will be tested on for the actual CRPNBC exam and is your main nursing class
the waitlist can move FAIRLY QUICKLY..many people do not accept, cannot pay, cannot provide proof of immunizations, or get a clear crim record check (more thorough than normal ones) and as such, they just move onto the next applicant. but the be honest, if you are past waitlist number 15, your probably out of luck. once you receive your acceptance in the mail, you have an extremely short amount of time to provide proof of everything, so you guys need to be on the ball. the program is awesome, these people in your CONCEPTS class will be in your classes every semester for the next 3 years too, so dont be douche baggy on your first day because bad impressions LAST.
also, for all those people who were given offers for both the diploma and degree..this is a trick question..unless you are offered 2nd year direct entry, then take the diploma. the reason being is that degree is one year difference ..you dont actually start the program until semester 3..year one of the degree is associated studies courses. so..unless you are specifically asked if you want 2nd year direct entry, TAKE THE DIPLOMA.also, if you take the diploma, you can transfer into the degree after one year, and still graduate with your class..but with a degree..even though pay difference, etc. equals no difference once you have your registration to practice as a psychiatric nurse
