Don't know what road to get on... completely lost and scared.

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello I'm Jennifer and I attend Cal State Long Beach and Im a freshman in pre-nursing. i really want to become a nurse. My school right now... it's impossible to get into the nursing program. It is so impacted that your GPA has to be "at least" a 3.2 GPA but in reality with so many people wanting to become a nurse the GPA is roughly around 3.8-4.0... And like all nursing programs i believe.. you only get two chances to apply. Im terrified. So i was planning on transferring to a different school where it's not as impacted with people but i don't know where to begin. Is it a good idea? Should i go out of state? or should i got to a private school and even then... wouldnt i have to take a test to get into the school? and how difficult is it? i heard you get only 3 tries to get in and if you fail youre done after that. and if you get into the private nursing school... if you fail one class i heard you get kicked out... is that true? Im also a Army ROTC cadet. I really want to become a nurse in the army so at the same time if i transfer i would have to find a school that has the program. Im not contracted and im not sure if it's a right path for me... for right now i like how the program is going but my main goal is to get into the nursing program. and if i get into the program i would most definitely do army because my main goal in the army is to become a nurse and nothing else. What should i do? :crying2:

Thank you So much. sorry for so many questions. im just really scared for my future. :( and also... is there some career that is some what similar to nursing? I dont have a back-up plan if i don't get accepted into the program.

Jennifer,

Go talk to the schools and find out what the specifics are for each school. Only two or three chances to apply,... hmmm, that does not make sense to me. Why the restriction? My school says they will kick you out if you fail 2 classes, but I don't think its really enforced. Moving out of state or private school means higher tuition. Only you can make those decisions. I understand that high GPAs are needed in California. Get in touch with a few schools and go visit. Talk with the dept. heads and instructors. Do your "homework"

Specializes in future OB/L&D nurse(I hope) or hospice.

So you say you are in CA. Do you by any chance have family or friends in Las Vegas? I am in Las Vegas attending the College of Southern Nevada and THANK GOD the competition here is not nearly as bad as it is in CA. The min requirements are at a least a 2.5 gpa, pass the Teas test and completion of pre-reqs. I believe this last time the nursing office accepted 256 applications for 124 spots. Not so bad at all. Also, CSN has a very good NCLEX pass rate. So, just an option. You can go to their website and check it out. www.csn.edu Good luck.

I agree that you should talk to a nursing admissions, adviser. However, the restriction for application is real at some schools. You definitely should speak to a

nursing admissions adviser for the schools you are interested. Each school has their own criteria for admission. My school, you can only apply twice - The restriction comes from the TEAS V Exam - You can only take it twice to be considered. So if you you don't pass it on the 2nd try, thats it. You can no longer apply here. But other schools have different criteria, some let you apply unlimited times, or you might be restricted to one per year or something else.

I'm not in CA so I have no advice for you, but I will tell you this. A year ago, I was probably feeling like you, scared about whether or not I would get in to a program. I worked hard and focused and made sure my GPA was competitive and come January 2011, I will be starting nursing classes. Point, I'm trying to make here, don't give up before you've even tried! You are a Freshman so you have plenty of time to bring your GPA up. Just focus and keep your eyes on the prize. Don't worry about not getting in. Tell yourself you will get in. Worry about Plan B when you get there, right now just focus on excelling in your pre-reqs. Trust me, its not impossible to have your GPA in at 3.8 -4.0 if you work at it. Treat your GPA like a newborn baby, nurture it, care for it, don't let anyone get in the way of taking care of it.

Don't even worry about failing nursing school. Keep a positive attitude. People do get kicked out of nursing programs but if you go in thinking about it too much, I think you already set yourself up for failure. Right now I would work on Plan A. Doing your very best to achieve the GPA to be considered competitive for admission. If that does not work, then move to plan B, but don't start thinking about not getting in at the moment, when you haven't even tried.
