Donating my body to Science!

Nursing Students General Students

I was very anxious about being an older, overweight student with a group full of young, slender classmates until I realized that I am doing them a big favor by letting them assess me!

No one else in any of my labs has such high numbers, has such an extensive history, or has actual issues to discuss! I did a skin assessment on a 22 yo with a gorgeous complexion, so soft and smooth and blemish free. Boy, did she have some age spots, wrinkles, scars to describe on me! When we did BP's my classmates thought they couldn't find mine because they weren't going high enough. Many of them had 100/60 or something like that. They didn't know that real people could have a 130/85+. I've actually had a higher BP lately and am having it checked regularly to see if it's a reaction to meds. Many hadn't had to make their cuffs inflate that far before!

This week we do our bathing suit bed baths. I'm no longer nervous about it. (Well, I might be a little anxious, but not bad) I figure that on most of them the washcloth will just glide over. There will be nothing to lift or separate. In the real world, there are lots of nooks and crannies caused by excess skin and weight fluctuations. I'm just doing my part to better their education by letting them experiment with me!:roll

Yes, Rebecca, even RN's do learn bathing! I know quite a few students were shocked... hey, just delegate! But, there is not always someone else to do it, and as a former patient, I think that the personal care that a nurse does is the most caring thing that a nurse does. Besides, you have to know how to do it and how it feels if you are going to delegate it to someone with less authority... we want those baths done right!

You'll find that you do a lot of things that you never dreamt you would do in nursing school!

I had to add on to this thread again. I was absolutely horrified the other day in lab. We were practicing head to toe assessment. I figured with slacks on no need to shave - WRONG!!

It turns out that I have a rather strong Dorsalis Pedis pulse - The kind everyone wants to check out

There I am with my pants leg shoved up, my hairy legs and very unmanicured toenails on display for all :rotfl:

LOL! The title of this thread reminds me of Rodney Dangerfield saying that when he dies, he's going to donate his body to science FICTION... :)

We did a little of both

Bed Bath, male and female perineal care, oral care, back rub and occupied bed were all with dummies

Sidelying position, bedpan, transfer from bed to chair, ambulation, ROM, temp, respirations, pulse (apical, radial), BP, and restraints were all on each other.

We stayed fully clothed through all of it. Of course the bedpan was just pretend...no one actually used it.
