Hi, all!
So ive been thinking about this for a while and can’t come to a decision. I recently graduated in May and I passed my boards in July.
I interviewed at my current job (Hackensack) for a med interim/stepdown floor. And I was offered the position. They’re actually going to be cross training nurses for the icu on that floor. However, I’ve worked that floor as a NA and it’s super rough. But there is the possibility I’d be able to go to the icu within a year or two. It’s close to home (I could walk if I wanted) but I don’t think I see myself staying there for long. Also it would be part time nights to start.
I also interviewed at NYP for a cardiac tele/stepdown floor, and I was also offered the position. It’s An Amazing hospital and it would take me about 20 minutes driving to get there. But I live in NJ and I’d be taxed twice and have to pay for the commute. However, the salary is way higher than the other offer. And their cardiac department is amazing. I just don’t know how long it would take me to get to the ICU. This position would be full time nights.
My ultimate goal is to be a cardiac ICU nurse. That’s where my passion is.
If anyone has any insight or advice that would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!

It is true that you will pay double taxes out of your paycheck, but NJ will refund most of the taxes you paid to NY when you file your state tax returns.

Both jobs should put you in a good position to go to ICU. I would not take a job soley based on the job will take after this one. You have to spend a good portion of your adult day to day life there. Go for the job that will be the best for you now. I would definitely take the cardiac one. Even with the toll u will pay on the commute. Good luck!

I’m sure you made you choice by now but as someone part of both systems, I would go with the latter. But good luck wherever you go.

Thank you so much! I did go with the NYP offer. I felt it was a better fit for me.

That’s really good to hear. I’ve been talking to some friends I know who work in the city and they told me the same.
Thank you so much!

Thank you so much! That is very true. I picked the cardiac because it seems like a better personal fit for me all around!
